I live on a small livery yard and own horses and chickens, I know the best farm dog are probably border collies but I want something different so I was wondering if anyone's had experience with dog breeds that are good with horses n chickens ?:) x

Golden retrievers, mine have self taught themselves to help round up the chickens at bedtime. They are also fantastic around horses and other animal/humans.

I volunteer for GRWE which rehomes greyhounds and lurchers. Believe it or not we home lots to homes with cats and/ or chickens, some have very low chase instinct!

If not, labradors, spaniels and toys should all have a low ish prey drive/ soft mouths and be easy to train.

A collie will want to heard, even if it doesn't bite them, so wouldn't be my first choice!

lurchers are good with horses in my experience, not sure good with chickens though. ive known golden retrievers, flat coated retrievers and Rottweilers all good with horses as well.
I've had experience with a border collie trying to herd my pony .... she wasn't having any of it!

any breed.... its a matter of socialising correctly not the breed itself ;)

Why not go through the KC website take a look at the different breeds and see what takes you fancy, they have a program you can go through that will help you narrow breeds down and if your keen then go along to an event either held by the breed club or something like discover dogs where you will see all the breeds, the KC hold their own event but you'll also find the DD tents at any of the gamefairs if your interested in working or gundog breeds.

Research is the main thing, its what you can live with and what your prepared to invest in a dog. Horse owners don't have a great reputation with rescues for an example because they tend to put the horse first and the dog roams but if your prepared to do the same work with your dog as your horse you'll be quids in :D

Happy hunting.

Cavs :) I have chickens, horses, a rabbit and a cat. My 3 cavaliers are everyone's friends. They're also awfully cuddly :D

Bracco italiano :) handsome very different dogs! Mine comes riding with me. It's says in their breed profile they have to love all animals and people, and it's true! Mine hasn't a bad bone in him. Quite big but lovely :)

a collie is not going to automatically be a good farm dog - they can be weapons of mass destruction around horses and chickens without the correct handling.

I'd want something with a very short coat so you don't end up with a smelly dog with muddy dreadlocks!
Long legs help as well to keep their under-carriage out of the mud too.

Our GSP is born to live on a smallholding/farm- he loves being outside whatever the weather, is very good with other animals, clever enough to keep out of the way when needed etc and just likes to be with you all day, every day :)

I have a springer/collie cross who is fantastic with all other animals although she does enjoy trying to round up my friends chickens!:D
