I've never had in my 20 years horseyness one that has such a problem with flies/midges

He is wearing his bug rug, fly fringe, on garlic, and fly repellant but I took his rug off yesterday and again hes full of lumps, one right on his girth about 1 inch long oozing that yellow gunk, scabs all over his poor face, i squished 3 horse flies in one go yesterday on him. hes such a lovely looking horse but ruined by this.

I cant stable him as the roof's collapsed so waiting to get it fixed.

What else can I do? any ideas appreciated

Have you tried the Rambo fly rug called something like FlyBuster? Got one for my boy a week ago coz the flies were driving him mad too and he's a veteran (a FAT veteran!) and can't twist round to sort the little bleeders out so easily any more. Did some research and found this rug. It's impregnated with insecticide and I have to say does exactly what it says on the tin! No flies near my boy. Worth every penny of its price.

Once the stable is fixed, is there any way you could bring him in during the day? Ours are out at night and it makes such a difference. Other than that, can't think of anything. Apart from Marmite - that is supposed to help, although you might end up with a horse that demands a Marmite sarney every morning...

try a boet copy rug from divoza its as good as the real thing and a darn sight cheaper. you'l need electric fencing so it doesnt get ripped on anything.
you might find if you bring him in during the day he will have something sturdy to itch on walls etc.
not sure about the rambo rug surely once its washed the fly repellant will get weaker ???
definatly try the nettex stuff it works for me i also feed marmite its worth giving it a try.
best of luck.
surely if someone has the cure for sweetitch we would all be using it and they would be incredibly rich !!!!!!!
lotions and potions help but its bloody hard work to beat the damn midges

what is your fly spray? if you dont try something with deet in it it is fantastic it is lincesed for horses they use this in the army when peoples body parts get blown off to keep the pests away to stop the limbs getting gang green and stuff you will never see a fly in yards of your horse well i dont on mine!

My boy is also suffering with midges etc. He wis wearing a Rambo sweetitch hoody which protects his body very well and a hoody with fly mask underneath trouble is this morning he has rubbed his face nearly raw . The mask has made his face sore from him rubbing .How much marmite do you use in the feed?I feel so helpless against the b****y midges !

I'd recommend Deosect fly repellent and feeding brewers yeast..... A bit less messy than marmite

My cob use to be bothered by flies, not to the extent that your poor horse is, but he seems to be much happier now he's on the brewers yeast and is bothered much less.

Hope you find a solution for your horse
