Hi all,

need your advice! Looking at buying a 4x4 :D Iv been looking at the Landrover Freelander (2002-ish model) and noticed many are 1.8l...... I own one 16hh horse but would probably be looking to get something that would pull two. So what engine size would i need? ...would i need the 2.0l even if i was just towing one? :S

thanks ;)

You need to know the weight of the trailer plus the weight of the horse and all the kit you are going to carry and then choose a car that will manage to tow that weight.

A freelander will not tow 2 - legally! i have a nissan navara which is the dogs doodahs! and very handy having the back to chuck all the junk in. Will tow all day! Freelanders are shite as well, so are discos! - had one of each, wouldnt have another! (or any other Land Rover for that matter unless its the defender!)

The engine size isn't the important issue, it's the maximum towing weight that matters. A freelander with a 1.8l engine must be a freelander 1, so the maximum weight it can tow legally is 1.8 tons but you probably wouldn't really want to tow more than 1.5 tons to Bevin the safe side. When you consider an Ifor 505 (used the most popular make as make weighs about a ton and a 510

More importantly than is it legal to tow - is it heavy enough to stop if the trailer plus horses runs into the back of it. IMO no CAR should be allowed to pull livestock. 4x4 and the appropriate ones at that, should be legal. - Just my opinion tho:D

Sorry blooming IPhone, wasn't finished editing. An ifor will weigh about a ton, a 16hh at least 500 kg depending on breed, you wouldn't be able to tow two with a freelander.

I have a Freelander 2 litre and it tows an Ifor Williams 505 with a TB fine, I dont do long journeys and I find the clutch is not good for reversing, just not man enough. I had an Isuzu Trooper before and it was brilliant, made for the job. Cheap to buy aswell, just very thirsty.

If you want to tow 2 Horses you need something much much bigger / heavier than a Freelander.

Think Defender :-) A real 4X4 !!

Or, a big big big van!! They tow better than any 4X4, unless you need to go on mud or wet grass, in which case, read first suggestion!

LOL

Seriously, Freelanders aren't good. We have had 2 and regretted both.

As has been pointed out its weight thats important, this means the towing vehicle not only has the power to pull the trailer but also the suspension to keep the whole rig level and brakes that will stop it.. ( we did this discussion last year some time) I would second the Trooper. I've been using an R reg to tow an Ifor W 510 and its great. 27mpg around the lanes, 22mpg towing a 16.1 horse. points to check. If its an older 3.1 Trooper (slightly less refined but great work horse) check all engine recalls done. if a 3.0 has the throttle position sensor been replaced? (about £250 from Milners 4x4) dont know why they go but they do, usually get engine warning light on and slight reduction in power, 20 min job to change. Check for rust at the front of chassis legs and suspension joint ware at the front. check brakes properly serviced.
Lots of answers here

I agree with comments about Discos and Freelanders

I read some where that the ideal "tower" should be at least 2.5 lts engine. Freelanders are rubbishfor towing (i think) we even pulled a 505 ifor williams trailer with a merc ml
2.7 lts with 1 tb horse in, never again
It broke my 4x4 :(

I towed with a w reg disco & it was crap - yes it pulled nice but broke down on any journey longer than 11/2 hours & everytime I had 2 In however far!!! So I have now been using my mams Nissan terrano think its a 3 litre & that's great!! Just bought myself an old N reg 2.8ltr pajero, getting tow bar fitted tomorrow. Can't wait!! Will never touch landrover again!!
As others have said though - you need to check trailer weights & towing capacity of car/4x4 xx
