Think my horse has abcess what will I need or is most useful to keep the puncture clean.I have farrier coming out tomorrow horse has vertical crack in hoof and heat .The vet noticed the crack last week when checking tendon injury its about one inch down and vertical so maybe the abcess is trying to burst through the wall. There was no heat prior to this evening so we thought it was old trauma and we were concentrating on tendon.Any tips appreciated

You'll need animalintex - to be used warm and wet, a hoof boot if you have one, if not, some cheap nappies and a lot of duct tape.

Hot tubbing is something our vet advised, as hot as she could take it for at least 10 mins, twice a day.
cheap nappies is a great idea! beats vet wrap which i couldn't get to stay on for more than 10 mins!

Epsom salts for tubbing
Vetwrap - lots of
silver gaffa tape - lots of
And something as a poultice - animalintex covered with a bit of gamgee/silver foil or mag sulphate paste with newborn nappies (the cheaper option and just as effective)

I think the farrier has old macs they might do the job- straight down the tack shop in the morning yet again

I wonder if he will need sedating might be painful .He stood on 4 inch nail few weeks ago and had to have that dug out the duck tape didnt work for more than ten mins nightmare keeping it clean.

complete dab hand with this now as mine has had seedy toe and a nasty abcess....vet or farrier has to release it and leave it open to ooze out.....lovely!!
Right - I used tetranisn ( I think it is called - usually bought from the vet ) toothbrush and cotton wool buds are ideal....
Everyday I would clean the abcess out with the tetranisn, a toothbrush and then clean it off with a dry clean towel...allow them to stand on this as well when putting the hoof down....the main thing is keeping the hoof clean!!
I used duck tape or black tape as well as vet wrap....
Before you start on your thigh make a star with the black tape/duck tape.....
stuffed the hole with the bud covered in tetranism, cover hoof once dry with vet wrap and then unpeel the star from thigh to go on the bottom of the hoof or soar point( this gives extra padding) and cover with black tape.
My horse's heels became soar, so might be worth add cotton wool to that area as well as you add the black tape....

I was also told by my vet to mixed the tetranism with sugar as it becomes a paste and make it easier to sit and heal the wound.
I have recently been using hoof putty to cover the hole so my horse can be turn out....works a treat...
good luck with it....

I used an old mac when I turned mine out with the bandage...worked brilliantly - kept it dry and in place all day although they do get soar so you will need to use the sock inside them....
I had to have my lad sedated as he was hopping lame....

Thanks for the tips the tetranism is that the blue anti biotic spray .I have just remembered something else I used before stockholm tar to keep the wound clean its antiseptic but probably wont work if we have to drain the area first.

ahh the voice of experience lol
the hoof putty sounds fab, where do you get that? farrier? can you use it daily?

The hoof putty is tricky and you have to have a patient horse....first time I applied it he wouldnt keep still and I just about managed to add some....you have to rub it to make it stick and it wants to just stick to your fingers as you push it into the hole!! It takes a little while to set too....as I let my lad into his field he ran off and the putty flew off.....at £18 a pop its not the most fun...you dont need much to apply but once it is set it lets off disinfectants into the hole and helps with tissue rebuilding.....
I got mine with Keratex - they seem to have every hoof disinfectant/treatment under the sun and are very good....

Yep ive certainly feel like the hoof doctor :0)
