I'm new to these forums and new to horses.
I've not had much contact with "dealers" but the girl I used to work for, always bought youngsters from dealers, broke them in and sold them on.
There seems to be a lot of hate towards dealers and I was wondering if anyone can explain what the definition of a dealer is and why they are hated so much.
I feel really daft for asking, but thought I may as well.

A dealer is a person who buys horses for the specific purpose of selling them on at a profit.

Personally I would rather go to a dealer than to a private buyer, I have been around horses long enough to know what I am looking for and most of the twists and turns of disguising faults and/or lameness.

A dealer makes their reputation on not the good horses they sell but the bad. People are funny and if they buy a good horse then they are reluctant to say where they got it in case a friend goes to the same place and gets something better but, if they sell a bad horse then all will know where it came from!

I have certain dealers I have used and can call them and say exactly what I want and they will call me when they have found it. They know me and I trust them and rarely have I gone to look and found the animal unsuitable.

A good dealer will always take a horse back within a certain period.

its really hard to say whether someone is a bad dealer or not you have to go by reputation and recomendation a bad dealer would never give you back your money and they really dont care whether the horse is suitable a good dealer would hopefully say that horse is not right for you and try and find you one that was,i have bought a few horses from dealers not had any problems but i think i have a good eye and gut instinct
