Potentially looking at buying a foal due to be born in a Couple of weeks.

sire is cremello , dam is black.

breeder has told me the foal will be buckskin or palomino.

what are the chances of the foal having blue eyes?

Thank you :)

None. Single dilutes don't have blue eyes. It might if it has unpigmented area (eg large white marking/splash white) but not from the cream.
Sometimes single dilutes have paler brown eyes. Your foal could also be smoky black depending on the parents' agouti genotypes.

Thank you very much!!x

I think the breeder is wrong about buckskin- buckskin is only shown if there is an agouti (bay) gene present, and a black gene. It's possible the sire may have an agouti gene, but unless he does, there is no chance of buckskin as the dam doesn't have it. Has he produced buckskins before out of a mare who isn't bay?

Depending on the mare's genotype, if she is homozygous black, then palomino is also impossible- has she produced a chestnut or palamino foal before?

There's at least a 50% chance, possibly 100% chance of a smokey black- would you be happy with this outcome? Foal is very unlikely to have blue or pale eyes in this circumstance.

If you are looking to buy a foal of a specific colour, rather than because you like the parents in other ways, I'd look for a different foal and a breeder who understands the genetics of what they are tying to breed.

WF you are presuming the breeders doesn't know the horse's genetics. It is entirely possible with the horses are tested and can only get a palo/buckskin.

I'm not sure why you think the breeders doesn't understand the genetics?

I fully trust the breeder and know that she is experienced and fully aware of what her horses can produce.
The sire is cremello and DNA tested for
colour and is HOMOZYGOUS AGOUTI and RED. Meaning he cannot throw a Smokey black foal.

My question was simply regarding eye colour- thank you :)
