What fast 4x4 do you have to tow trailers but without B+E

Are you referring to actual weight or GVW ?

The rules for towing on a B licence refer to GVW not actual weight

Add vehicle GVW to trailer plated MAM = max 3500 kgs
Trailer plated MAM must not be more than vehicle kerb weight

Thanks ROG, yes I know it's gross not kerb weight! Have spent ages trying to figure out if there's a loop in the rules anywhere but sadly not!

An 01 plate Forester Turbo. It is meant to do 0-60 in 6 seconds or something and apparently has an Impreza engine. ***** on fuel, built like the proverbial so takes no notice when I ram it into fences trying to park it/get trailer through narrow gates etc, or indeed when the local garage drove into it with their transporter

I have had this for 10 years now and love it. Tow an Ifor 401 with no problems, although nothing larger than 15.2hh. Plenty of space for tack, dog, moving house etc.

It is getting on a bit but can't imagine not having a Subaru in my life ;)

Your comment about Subarus is exactly how I feel Smitty, but unfortunately the Forester just isn't big enough inside to be a family car too :( daughter is a growing 9 year old who seems to have more stuff every year when we go on holiday so it's just got to be a bit bigger!

^^^my husband had a Porsche Cayenne - whilst its unarguably fast,it was nowhere near as good as the Range Rover off road or in the snow. He frequently left it at home and used the Range Rover when it had snowed heavily, after having some hairy journeys in the snow in it. (In fact,he pronounced it '*****' in the snow, compared to the RR;))

We had a Range Rover for a while and I have to say that whilst running it was probably one of the nicest most fun big cars I've ever had. BUT, and it's a huge BUT the s0dding thing spent more time sat on the drive broken than it ever did on the road! It was the last year of the P38 version and has totally out me off anything even remotely vaguely connected with LR ever again! It was a money pit, a vast black hole type abyss for thousands of pounds to vanish into every month! Gave me nightmares! Sorry slightly OTT but definitely no RRs! :o

Martlin I had a look at the X trail and just couldn't live with the speedo etc being in the middle. Hubby would be able to see how fast I was going and tell me off! Plus it just seems weird! I know I'm fussy.

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that I may have to do my test and have an X5 or similar. It's pretty much got to be at least 170bhp and definitely prefer 220 upwards. Currently have 305bhp so couldn't go down big time.

Can't remember who said about the Legacy B spec, but I think you may be right, hubby won't like it as it's not the huge 4x4 but it's the only thing I can find lots of that I like at the age I want in my budget!

If anyone happens to be selling anything they think I might like within 150 miles of the south coast please do pm me! Getting fed up now and usually like car shopping! :(

Lol, fussy is good, I think. I actually just walked out to check if my speedo is in the middle :o, because I couldn't really remember, only to find out that the x-trail isn't there as my OH, who works away in the week needed a 4x4 this week... I drove his little toyota all week and didn't remember that either  I think I need professional help

Im in the same position as you – to tow on a B license and to tow one horse - but they all seem ugly or not quite ‘me’ as I love my sports cars … the only ones I like I need to take a test for so probably go with that option! x

What about an Audi A4?

Ive just looked at one - nice looking car:

GVW - 2025
Max tow (braked) - 1700
Kerb weight - 1611

Am I right (ROG) that say an empty trailer weight of 900 with a horse at 550 (totalling 1450) plus the GVW of 2025 = is under the 3.5t limit

Downplating trailer to 1475

Max trailer weight of 1475 is less than the kerb weight of 1611 = legal bearing in mind it will only go out every now and again and on main roads rather than off road places? x

Martlin that just seriously made me lol! I'm appreciating my Scooby even more today as it had to go in for a radiator pipe to be replaced on Monday and only got it back yesterday! Driving hubby's 'cute' Puma drove me nuts!

Same problem of not being big enough for me, as it's about the same size as my Scooby estate!

The trailer I'm looking at getting is a Bateson Derby lightweight, only weighs 675kg so leaves a little bit more room for error than your average 900kg Ifor. Plus they don't rattle like the Ifors do! I'll still only be carrying one, but like to have room for error just in case!

Cheap truck. ;)

If I had your car, they'd have to pry the keys out of my cold dead hands. :D

That's NOT helping! I do love my car but it is now getting on a bit at 12 years old almost and coming up to 150k miles. I've had it from only a couple of years old and done 135k of those miles myself :o trouble is that things will start to go wrong with it as it gets older and higher mileage, plus we need a bigger family car and since mine is the gas guzzler (17-21mpg on super unleaded) it's the one that has to go

Unfortunately at the rate I'm going hubby is going to come home to find a newer low mileage version of the same on one side of the drive with a cute little old truck on the other! Then I'll be getting divorce papers!

Spot on with the weights :)

25 kgs to spare is a bit tight

If horse is say 550 then down plating that trailer to 1300 would leave 75 kgs spare

with trailer at 1300 then you could have a vehicle with a GVW of 2200

the kerb weight of any vehicle in the 1900 to 2200 GVW range will be over 1300

Thanks ROG, that's very helpful :)

Off out to look at cars this weekend. Not sure if I'm looking forward to it or not! :o

If it were me i would spend another £4-500 quid and do my trailer test, in the over all costs of buying a new car/ trailer its not a lot really and you dont have to restrict yourself or worry about being close to limits (i only ever look at max towing weight vehicles 3.5t and it worries me slightly when people are so keen to just scrape under the limit)

Good point, only I can't seem to find anywhere that does it for less than about £800 and I'm balking at paying it when I know I just need a little bit of practice! My trailer driving is pretty good already, lots of practice with tractors and towing our camper, but I'd need a practice with a bigger trailer and all the places local to me want £800+ for it! Not impressed, but you're right! May have to have a rethink! ;)

Jeez thats a lot! i think mine was about £450 for 3 hours training on a saturday, then an hour before the test and the test cost itself! Must be a benefit of being 'up north' !

Hope you get sorted!

I love my 57 reg x-trail, great riund corners, plenty of oomph, great in snow and ice and tows like a dream! Oh and the dials are all in front of the driver, not in the middle!

4wd? Towing? Prompt? Get yourself a Porsche Cayenne, they can be re-chipped in excess of 400bhp, which should be all the speed that you want. Not sure what the cargo will think of it. Mind you, as horses generally crap in the trailer anyway, you'll hardly be able to use that to measure the fear-factor! Let us know how you get on! ;)

Alec.

Thanks Dirty D, might try bargaining with them a little bit! South East is always mega expensive for everything!

Lol, I'll have to have another look. Although if I remember rightly the power is not much on them compared to what I'm used to, so would be great for the towing but could see me getting very fed up very quickly! I'm not the patient sort!

Hehe, good thinking Alec ;) we do have the Cayenne on our list of maybes to check out tomorrow so will see how it goes. Only other thing is I've now found exactly the Scooby I want in the right spec and with 258bhp in black, but it's in Belfast. Thinking maybe it's worth getting hubby to take me to Belfast for a weekend and see if I can sneak it past him on the ferry coming home?! :D

reading with interest, as I can only travel my girl on her own in a trailer anyway, but have a heavy rice and she must also be at least 650kg, so think it would be tricky to find something to be under the limit, I need to research further
however, I have now found someone who will do 3 days- 2 training and one with a bit of training then test, all included in price for £655, and that is south east near reading. really want to get the b+e as then I can feel safe that I'm a reasonable trailer driver! and in the winter or wet summers I can used a big 4x4 so I don't get stuck and feel more secure towing. however, that is all my training and I will have to wait to take it again if I fail as too expensive (not trying to be negative just realistic! as I know how easy it is to fail on driving bad habit rather than trailer issues)
