I have a 16.hh warmblood, aged 23. Up until last spring we were competing SJ/dressage and XC, beach riding and hacking but we noticed he started to really struggle and we came to the sad decision to retire him. I have still got him and we hack out just a couple of times a week. Since he has retired he weight has dropped off and he has obviously lost alot of muscle tone. While competing we had him on 1 scoop hi fi, half scoop of veteren mix, half scoop of sugar beet, 3 times a day, with one danilon and some cortaflex HA in one meal. Since retiring he is on 1 scoop senior hi fi, 3/4 scoop baileys no 4, and sugar beet 3 times a day, with cortafles HA and danilon in one meal.
Has anyone got any recommendations for feeding or supplements to get his weight back on, and maybe build him back up abit.
We have had blood tests done and they all came back fine.

A good balancer, Alfa-A, micronised linseed, full fat soya. All have plenty of protein for muscles. Oil for additional calories.

I would sugest soaking some grass nuts and see how you go... sometimes the simple things are best!

How much hay / haylage does he get? If it isn't add lib already I would sugest that you increase the amount he gets...

As for the exercise regime, it may be beneficial to give his metabolism a boost to try a little more frequent exercise - just hacking but something every other day or so....
