what feed would you recommend to....

If you've tried all the usual suspects,. sugar/speedi beet and TopSpec is the only thing which worked on my hard to keep weight on mare. Bloody expensive though!

Adlib hay/haylage (ie enough so there is some left in the morning if horse is stabled overnight) and preferably some in the field if grazing is poor. Then a high calorie fibre feed with added oil - I use Alfabeet and add my own veg oil, but another alternative would be Alfa A oil. If that is not enough on its own then add micronised barley or a conditioning cube or mix. Preferably split into 2 or 3 feeds a day.

Obviously check worming and teeth are up to date and that horse is warm enough.

Beau gets TopSpec cool condition cubes, topspec leisure time feed balancer, hi fi original, linseed oil, and half a scoop of alfa beet(alfa beet only in winter).

however our haylege isnt going to be as good this year with it being cut so late, so Ive just replaced his hi fi with alfa a oil.

he is a hard horse to keep the weight on at this time of year, as soonn as the grass drops off so does he.

He costs a bloody fortune to feed but he needs it.

You'll hate me for saying it but she nearly lives off fresh air now!

Honestly, so chilled out, she's on short rations though does have 24/7 out with a wad of hay at night; no high maintenance here and she is a porker!LOL!

OP: does depend what type, how kept, what work ned does TBH; not everything will suit every horse in every situation.

Pat - that would be because she gets to do her own thing and no-one is very unreasonably trying to ride her when it is clear she is a princess who was never meant for menial work, but merely to pass on her genes....

Funnily enough as soon as I chucked her out 24/7 and stopped trying to ride her, she looked fab within a month! Such is life I think.

Nothing, apparently! I never thought I'd say it, but it is marginally cheaper owning a novice eventer than it ever was owning her!! I no longer have the back man on speed dial, and in fact saw him more eventing than I did checking my horse - fab!

I am so glad she is well and happy though, I did love her, for all her faults....

Plenty of hay/haylage and I am a huge fan of alfa a oil and bailey's outshine - the only thing that puts weight on and keeps weight on my boy
