Our new 6 acres of land have just been topped and harrowed and I think we need to apply fert, but horrified at the price - twice what it was last year.

Can anyone tell me a good fertiliser to get, would it be possible for me to apply myself?

Any help much appreciated.

We don't use it as it causes Laminitis & soft soles!! rolling, harrowing and resting is all we do and have very good grazing paddocks all year round

We have used Equifert in the past - it is especially formulated for horse paddocks. We have 5 acres, and husband went up and down on our ride on mower with me sitting in a little trailer on the back chucking handfuls of fertiliser out. It worked a treat. Now that we have 2 minis and a laminitic, I'm not going to fertilise this year. As you are in East Anglia, you could get fertiliser from Rosie Fearnley (she supplies megazorb, Charnwood feeds and several different fertilisers for horse paddocks). Website here They are really nice people and will be happy to advise you.

Sorry it is really double the price, I'm just so glad husband persuaded me to buy two years at once..
The best plan really is to ask your local ag merchants to do a soil test, they can then recommend what you need. we did this and the amount of grass almost doubled.
It's cheaper in the long run as you can then just use what you need to balance it.
we used to do ours by hand, walking in a line with buckets..wear gloves, the nitrogen burns..

Thank you Henryhorn, I will consider this, any idea how much it costs?

FYM! (Farm Yard Manure aka cow muck!)
Bit smelly, but will give your soil a better structure than just chemicals, doesn't cause growth 'flushes' like chemicals and is more environmentally friendly! Also better if you have a variety of broad leaf grasses and meadow flowers as these are very sensitive to chemical fertilisers and are often killed off by them. Oh and probably cheaper!
