What flooring do you have around your dummy mare?

Non-slip rubber bricks are the ideal... long-lasting and hard-wearing. The alternative is just plain rubber matting down. It provides a good footing and can be easily cleaned.

Others I have seen used are:

Sand - the problem with this is that it moves and doesn't give a very steady footing, and can also be flicked onto the penis. From a male perspective, let me assure you that sand + penis is not a very good combination!

Scratched/sore penis and/or contaminated semen samples are the sorts of problems you run into collecting on sand.

Bark - Less likely to get kicked up and stick to the penis, but still does not really provide a good enough footing.

Hope that helps!

We have 2 types of rubber based floor tiles, both non slip.

The black ones at the back of the dummy which you can just see in the corner of the photo have a square pattern on the top which gives the most grip.

Both types are quite an "open" finish which allows easy disinfection & hosing.

Here in the Dubai Equine hospital they use hard wearing carpet over rubber floors with drains, it is the best non slip surface you can get. I have seen many horses slip over on so called non slip rubber tiles, with deverstating results.

So for me it has to be industrial quality carpeting.

The only problem I have with a carpetted collection barn floor is this:

Most international export rules require that the ground surrounding the dummy is "easily disenfectable" - I think that carpet would be not be allowed by the majority of bodies granting approvals of this type, who tend to like rubber matting/tiles. It would also present a pathogenic risk in non-export situations.

hmmm... you can get washable/waterproof carpets. they dont really have any pile to them at all.
my parents have some round their indoor pool, my parents also have carpet and furniture shops and i know my dad can get a range that i 'think' is called Floatex? or something..... I can actually see it being practical, not sure how the colour would hold up after regular disenfecting!

Well not a dummy mare scenario but we have the floatex carpet that my in laws laid when they moved into the farm in 1963 and its still going strong and easily cleanable!!

The Equine hospital has been up and running for the last 10 years and the carpet looks like new. It sounds similar to the type luckilotti has described as there is not much pile to it, but it is VERY anti slip even when soaking wet. It is cleaned with a power hose then wet vacuumed and the vets there have said it is far more hygienic than tiles as dirt gets between the tiles and is very difficult to clean properly. The liquid rubber floors (which would mean there are no cracks for dirt to hide in) are quite dangerous when wet

We have a lot of rubber walkways etc. for horses here in Dubai and as I have said earlier, I have seen some accidents that have ended up with horses having to be PTS due to their injuries, mainly broken pelvis or hips. Rubber when wet is not anti slip.
