What fly repellent do you use?

I am currently using Robinson's own brand fly repellent and although it is ok, I think there are better things on the market. However, fly repellent is expensive and I don't want to go and buy a bottle that turns out to be now better. What do all of you use? I have a Welsh Cob and a TB if that makes any difference...
 
I use Phazer, we have terrible horse flies round with us and found it is the only thing that keeps them at bay, nothing touches any of the horses that are wearing it.

Can almost choke to death putting it on, but then so do the flies!!!!!
 
I am not convinced that any of them do much good, but this year I am using NAF DEET mainly because it was on special offer at my local feed store. I also feed garlic as it is supposed to make them less tasty when the flies bite :)
 
I use Naf deet, to no effect, I use one we have in spain called, Crin Blanco... no effect! I tried Autan mossy repellent for humans, jungle strength, as my mum left it here, and that worked, heaven knows what's in it!
 
i use phazer thats seems to be the only thing that works from the shops
or alternatively i use cider viniger and baby oil home made cheaper and briliant the vinger stops them biting and the baby oil stops them landing very good also stopped my mares sweet itch in weeks ver very good :D

I use Naf Deet, it works really well on my boy.
One I'm not so keen on Net-tex Advanced - its really sticky and attracts dust and dirt, although it does work very well as a repellent and lasts ages without having to reapply, so if you're not fussed what they look like I'd go for it!
 
i make my own and have done since the EU stopped them using citronella in commercial sprays found it was cheaper and worked better. As I have a leopard spot appoloosa I use half water half white vinegar plus 15 drops of tea tree oil, 15 drops of peppermint and 20 drops of citronella oil cost about a tenner from the health food shop for the oils which last well over a season. Did find that cold tea instead of water worked better but no good for a white horse esp at shows!!
 
Think they are all useless. I feed garlic all year round and don't seem to have a problem with flys. I got the odd fly sheet I use if one does get a few around them which works out a lot cheap in the long run.

I've just finished using a bottle of Fly-Away Citronella Fly Spray, but this time i have bought the NAF OFF one which smells of garlic. My pony hates the smell of the Citronella one and it makes him sneeze all the time. He still sneezes when I put the garlic one on him but not as much. I prefer the NAF OFF one because it seems to be effective and discourages the flies and also it smells more natural. :)
 
I have tried loads and don't find they work.

I use DEET I used to get it from my vet but now buy NAF. I also use NETNTEX or NAF de itch pink greasy cream which helps my Highlands sweet itch.
 
I use power phaser. My old tb does get bitten a lot, resulting in swellings. The natives really don't seem to be bothered by flies. Either they don;t get bitten or they don;t swell.

I have tried several for the old horse, many don't work but power phaser does, although I have almost finished a bottle in 10 days and at £14.95 I can't afford it!! Am now going to look at the homemade fly repellent thread.......
 
If you go into stableyard there is a sticky at the top of the page with a load of homemade recipies.They work out so cheap i use tons of it and it works. I am also thinking about doing the marmite sandwich thing too. You can still buy citronella from the chemists so i use that
 
I've given up on wasting money on p**s water you buy which is supposed to keep flies away, likewise miracle-working supplements.

I've tried the cold tea one, mixed with citronella, tea tree plus some TCP in there too, etc. Not sure but hopefully it will work! also I've heard that Elder is good, boil up the leaves and/or put a sprig in your horse's mane or whatever.
 
We use the Boots equivelent of Jungle Formula spray, I think its called Repel Extra Strength. Its about £6.50 but during the summer is nearly always on a 3 for 2. It lasts for ages and really works. My tb has a problem particuarly with flies biting and burrowing down the front of his neck and one spray of this in the morning completely keeps them off all day. Its also great to keep the midges off ourselves when we are up at the yard in the evening. It smells good and has a fine spray so there is no waste. Been using it for several years now.
 
i use NAF Deet....it's pretty good. Does anyone remember one in a metal botal called, i think, Fly-Tac? Can you still get it? i remember it smelt terrible, like alcohol or chemicals and was one of the only ones around when i was a kid!
 
I'm finding Coopers quite useful this season. I haven't used it before. It is expensive, but I only apply it to my filly's face and ears, and on her belly infront of her teats and inside back legs. She really suffers badly from bites and wears a fly rug and mask everywhere else.

Might try Phaser next though..... I really need something that works.

Oh... and she also wears a couple of Flectron cattle tags - although I am not convinced they're helping all that much.
 
Jezzerbell - how much water do you use in your recipe? Want to try it but I don't want to over-do the oil:water ratio!
