hi, been out for lovely ride today (except for the fact he nearly dumped me when we came off the road into field and thought it was time to rear and bolt for home!!) anyhow the only thing that spoiled our outing was blasted flies. has anyone found a repellent that actually works? have spent a small fortune over the years but nothing really does the job. know some make up their own but wouldn't have a clue what to put in it and in what quantities. any ideas appreciated.

home made, citronella, oil not essence of, try holland and barrat, then whatever strength it says, x by 1.5 and it should work.

my sister sells Avon and she says at this time of year people go mad for the skin so soft stuff people on here say it works even helps horses with seet itch i have just ordered mine its on buy one get one free at the moment

I have just bought some NAF fly repellent, I applied it last night for the first time so I'll keep you posted with whether or not it works! I have also used Phaser which, yes - smells horrific, but works well.

Let me know if you find anything effective!

i make my own
cider vinegar 250ml
cold tea 250ml
citronella oil 10 drops
lavenday oil 5 drops

it works as well as anything, and is especially good at deterring midges

AVON SKIN SO SOFT - LIGHT GREEN MINT COLOURED BOTTLE (WOODLAND). Its only £2.50 a bottle at the moment, far cheaper than fly repellent and also repels midges, I started using it this year on a severe switch itch horse of mine, he now has a tail and mane (do use fly rug too) and has successfully lived out for 5 days without going nuts stressing and itching. I use it on all 5 of mine and its working wonders.
