Which fly spray do people recommend for general day to day use?
I have been using Nettex which back at home worked wonders but down here doesn't seem to affect the flies at all, bizarre!

Interested to know what people find effective- I've used the barrier health care superfly plus stuff and naf deet/fly off both not very effectively.

Thanks!

home made (concoction of vinegar, benzyl benzoate, tea tree oil and citronella oil, topped up with water) with a fly rug too (to keep her sweet itch under control).

I use my homemade receipe of neem oil, dettol, avon skin so soft, citronella, bog myrtle, tea tree, cedar wood and eucalyptus oil topped up with water. Keeps midges and flies at bay, though they also wear snuggy bodies to help with their SI. It works well and is cheaper than the stuff you can buy and I know there are no really nasty chemicals in it. Also great on us when we are poo picking to stop us getting bitten by mozzies.

Slight change here to others, but I use Mark Todd Fly spray! Great stuff. Squirt it on at 7am in the morning and I can still smell it at 5pm! I bought my first bottle at Chatsworth in May 2008, I've just started a 3rd bottle. Even accounting for the 3 months of box rest last summer, that's only only a bottle a year/summer. About £12 for a litre bottle, slightly less for the refill.

Yup i use similiar concoction of citronella topped up with water - works a treat!

It's funny that because I bought the large bottle of it (if its still the same stuff....black bottle, silver writing), and it seemed to attract the flys :confused: and the smell was rather pleasant :D

What works for one doesn't always for another I guess.

I went through loads of brands too!
The only one that was effective was Coopers but is now 29 pounds and i get through alot as my ID is a big boy so that is now out of my price range!

Invested in a fly rug which works a treat although he still gets bites around the neck and head as that is the area still exposed.

Think i might give the Phaser one a try too !!!

Coopers! Expensive, but so worth it
Kate x

Ditto Coopers as well, but if your putting it into a spray dispensor, make sure it doesnt get clogged up and then spurt out in guey blobs, otherwise your horse looks like it's been attacked with tree sap, it's a buggar to wash out.

Hence why it also says shake well on the orignal coopers bottle as it settles in the bottom....yeah I switched into in a spray bottle and forgot to shake it :D

Another vote for Power Phaser here - the only thing that seems to deter those nasty bloodsucking flies. Even better now they have a gel version as well!

Yet another vote for Phazer, we have masses of horse flies round us and only thing that keeps those pesky things away!!!! Nearly chokes you putting it on so can understand why the flies stay well clear! :)

Equss Marigold Spray. Smells lovely, good for their coats, and works! :) Brilliant stuff. But, admittedly, we don't have terrible flies. I think if we were in a bad area I'd probably have to use something stronger.

I had a bottle of Power Phaser, excellent stuff but went through it in two weeks!! £14.95 a bottle, not cheap!! Was using it morning and evening on one horse.

Have got a Nettex one at the moment, which seems to be working, but leave a bit of a greasy residue.

Just waiting for an avon delivery then will be making my own.

NAF OFF (the one on the pink bottle) It smells of garlic and definitely seems to deter the flies. Also, one of my horses hates the smell of the citronella fly sprays and prefers the garlic one.

Phaser again. It stays on my skin even after I've had a shower, so I can support its claim to be shower proof too :D

(Pity it reeks! but does what it says on the tin)

I usually make my own with dettol, citronella, vinegar and water, which does seem to work well. but sometimes i use the Barrier one.

I would like to try the power phaser one though as it sounds like a hit!

move to aberdeenshire - weather has been so **** this year flys havent been much of a problem:rolleyes:

Completely agree. If - dare I say when - the weather warms up it'll be Flyzoff for mine. It seems to be as good as any and only needs applying once or twice a week. I feed garlic too - no vampires either. :D
