What food for an overweight dog?

My cairn terrier seems to be expanding before my very eyes. At the moment he is fed one-eighth of a medium sized tin of Butchers dog meat, half a handful of dry mixer biscuits and one handful of Bakers senior dry dog food per day. It doesnt look like much to me and he is always starving hungry and will steal food if he gets the chance.

He just keeps getting fatter though! Can anyone suggest a better diet for him? He's ten years old. He does get at least two decent walks per day although he will only walk, not run, even if he is off the lead.

Hi - firstly I would get him checked by your vet - if he is still putting on weight despite cutting his food down, there may be an underlying problem - possibly with the thyroid. They can run a simple blood test to check this. If he isn't showing much enthusiasm for life, this can also be a symptom of thyroid problems. I used Burns High Oats to get the weight off my chubby labrador - worked brilliantly. Good luck!

i second mousehole, i've seen burns high oats do a mavelous job too, also it is better quality then what you are feeding now.

Check with the vet first for underlying problems but if it is just overweight and he doesn't run about much have you tried swimming him? Also mine chase a ball for England! This really gets them running around. (if not a ball try his favourite toy)

He is on medication for eye problems and we are due for a vet visit next month so will ask them to check his bloods then. He has never been interested in balls, toys or anything else in the whole of his ten years - weirdly nor is his brother. I had wondered about swimming but he is a nervous nellie, and has got more frightened of his own shadow as he has got older and I was worried he might think I was trying to drown him

Will get hold of some Burns dog food and try feeding that between now and our next vet visit to see if there is any improvement.
