I have a retired 5 year old, she is 16.3 and seems a bit bored. Her field mate is an older mare who doesn't like playing, so I would like to introduce a bit of fun into her day :)

She does enjoy playing 'tig' with OH, although OH does get a bit nervous when 16.3 of brick outhouse is bearing down on him!

Any suggestions as to what we can do with her? She can't be long reined or lunged, so it is just something to do either loose in the field or on the lead rein.

I like the ball idea, but the field is on a hill with electric fencing, so it would roll under the fencing straight away. Although I guess I could just put the ball in when I am there and kick it back to her. I'll try that :)

Anything else?

You could do some low key horse agility e.g going in, under and on spooky things, teach her some tricks like how to stand on a small pedestal (I did this with mine for a bit of fun when he was on 6 weeks field rest). https://www.facebook.com/horseagilitygb It doesn't have to be high impact. Also could teach tricks like how to bow, give kisses etc.

I'm a bit loathe to put out treats/ice pops etc as her field mate is a bit on the porky side, and I don't want them fighting over treats.

Liking the idea of teaching her tricks, I think she will really enjoy that :D

You have to be beware though as mine learnt to bow because of doing carrot stretches and now he bows whenever he thinks he might get a treat especially if I touch him under his girth area :o :D

A gym ball wouldn't go under the fence would it?
