i have seen no snow, a light frost 3 mornings, and we have only just got rain for the first time in months... and this is supposed to be the harshest winter on record?

non of the horses on our yard have grown a coat, and i actually think its quite warm for this time of year

im not moaning about the fact that its warm but why do they insist on scaring us half to death about an ice age type winter?

hmmm :o

Noone can accuratly predict the weather more then a few weeks in advance, its impossible. They can have a rough idea but them saying the winter is going to be this that and the other is a total guess made on lots of assumptions so I wouldnt pay too much attention to it!!

Don't worry, there's still a few days of October left - it could yet snow! ;)

I was looking at the pictures of when we viewed H last November - which reminded me that it was -2 at the time! This time last year (well, just about) it was bitter!

Have to say, I do think everyone is just on their high horses after last year and everyone just wound up incase it happens again. Don't think it will but that's just me...or at least I'm hoping it doesn't!

Well, they didn't say which October did they...!! At the end of the day, it was a Daily Mail headline and a met office prediction - backed up by a few stories about berries...

About 5 years ago we were told we were going to have a harsh winter with loads of snow. As we had had little snow for years, I got excited and bought 3 sledges for my girls. It didn't snow that winter or the following one!

We had one morning last week at -2, but this morning at 6.30am it was a balmy 10C, I'm thinking i could have bought a new bridle instead of snow tyres!

I still think that a cold winter may be a possibility, and last October it was wet and mild at around this time, so no guarantee that we won't have a hard winter ahead. That being said I think there is quite a bit of hype about the coldest ever winter ahead etc. but I suppose at the end of the day only time will tell!

October 2010 Statistics

The first few days were unsettled over most of the UK with copious amounts of rainfall, but pressure then built from the east to give more settled weather and some warm days.

For about 10 days from mid-month it was then colder with northerly winds and some very low overnight temperatures. In the last week, frontal systems from the west resumed their influence bringing much milder air and rain at times.

Overall, temperatures were close to normal. Rainfall was also close to normal in many areas, but it was drier than average in the west. It was a sunny month, especially in the west. Provisionally, it was the sunniest October on record in Wales and Northern Ireland.

A maximum temperature of 23.1 °C was recorded at Chivenor (Devon) on 8th. Levens Hall (Cumbria) and Sennybridge (Powys) both had minimum temperatures of -6.6 °C early on 25th.

Glenlee (Dumfries & Galloway) recorded 62.0 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 0900 on 2nd. A wind gust of 63 knots was measured at Capel Curig (Conwy) on 29th.

i have seen no snow, a light frost 3 mornings, and we have only just got rain for the first time in months... and this is supposed to be the harshest winter on record? I think that is still 1962/63. My Mother got married at the end of December and was snowed in at Salcombe (Devon), with her guests, for a week, they never did get to the hotel they had booked at Chagford

im not moaning about the fact that its warm but why do they insist on scaring us half to death about an ice age type winter?

Covering their backs perhaps?

It is hardly an ice age type winter:) just parts of Britain catching up with some European countries (Take Scandinavia for a start . My OH was in Bosnia - in a tent - and they had -30C in the day) What the UK has had in the past two winters is normal in North America.

It just seems worse because Brits simply haven't been set up for it and aren't used to it. It could be worse, it could be colder... and longer. Better snow and blue sky any day than rain, rain, rain.

Agree with Enfys, I would rather have freezing temperatures with/without snow any day rather than warm and wet. Obviously I would prefer warm and dry but I don't think that is very likely!!

we had a snow shower last week lol :D Both my horses have huge winter coats grown already  so you never know ;) I do really hope that we get a cold and dry winter. No snow and very minimal rain, my field has been a wet slimey mess since the end of july :(
