What has happened to Flint Curtis?

I'm not being funny but what is going on with Flint Curtis and Oliver Townend? Is it buggered? Why the stops at the Europeans and failing the final trot-up? Also in Oliver's European interview before the XC he didn't seem particularly confident. I think it got hammered since winning that Express Eventing, and Badminton was the last straw. What does everyone else think?

That event horses at this level work very hard and sometimes sustain a few injuries & that your introductory post makes you look (at best) a rather uncaring horse person describing Flint as "it" and clearly (your choice) not an Oliver fan....welcome to the forum

Not that we anthropomorphise our horses but...

Not sure how old Flint curtis is , but the sport is pretty punishing. Can't all be as robust as Over to you. Probably just tweaked a tendon or something fingers crossed.

I am a huge Oliver fan, and it is because of my love of the horse that I posted this forum because I would like to hear from anyone that might know anything about it!! I work with horses and am currently helping to rehab a 3* event stallion that has sustained a leg injury ..... and Im not understanding the adversion to the work "it", it is common practice to refer to an animal as "it" rather than "he/she", welcome to the English language!

This.

As it happens I'm watching the European Championships x-country OH recorded for me and Flint Curtis looks physically fit & fine to me.

Common practice? Maybe. Nobody I know has ever referred to their horse as 'it' and I know some very experienced people who are at the top of their game. I cannot abide people atributing human qualities to horses but as the horse is a living creature with a defined gender, I see no reason to refer to him as if he is not - that is correct use of the English language.

Not for me it isn't.

Do you know for certain that the horse has sustained a bad injury? I have to admit I am ignorant of what happened at the trot up or any news since.

If you are interested in rehabilitation, you may have better luck asking a question specifically about what you are doing with your horse or a general rehab question. I'm sure there will be people here who will have experience in the field and will be able to help

Edited because my w sticks!

I also work for a 4* event team and I find that everyone often horses are referred to it, but perhaps it's a regional thing, I am from up north. Although I agree that I refer to my own horses as he/she, but the horses that I groom for as "it". I also used "it" to distinguish Flint from Oliver, as using "he" may have confused. I don't think Oliver's buggered but correct me if i'm wrong!! Apologies to everyone for the offence, it was certainly unintended!!

The old question Livestock, sports equipment, or pet. Most people I know who work with horses refer to them as "It". They all take better care of them than half the people I know who have then as pets without the requesite knowledge and insist on being gooey over them.

If your a professional horse person teamtotilas then fantastic to have you on the forum - you'll be much more use than telling us what good actors there are in late night Hollyoaks!

Saying that my horse is a he, and anyone that says otherwise gets stabbed with a pitchfork ! (kidding)

No offence taken, as such, it's just that, personally, I find it very odd that anyone would refer to a living creature, one that is named and with a known gender (rather than, say, one of many unknowns) as 'it'. I'm not a bunny hugger, by the way

, far from it; I livery on a hunt master's yard, for example, and have yet to hear anyone use it.

Anyway, as I said, maybe a general post about rehab would be better placed to get some advice as to the different avenues. Or give us some info about the rehab you're doing and are interested in, then others may be able to relate and help

Good idea muffinino ..... the stallion that I am referring to has sustained a hemorrage inside his leg, due to a hard knock competing at Advanced level. The clot itself has formed a large, hard lump that is pressing against his tendons and ligaments and causing a great deal of pain, so much so that even in walk he is hopping lame. He's had the vet to him every other day and we've used all sorts of lotions and potions, every cold and icing treatment possible, and nothing seems to be draining the lump. The vets seem a bit stumped .... has anyone has any experience with this sort of injury?

I should stick this on a post / thread , or whatever they call 'em on it's own. I can see the "it" thing roling.

If you work with horses how can you be up so late - i'm stuck here on an 'orrid night shift which is my excuse.

I really shouldn't be up at this time but I've just discovered the H&H forum and must say I'm fascinated!!
I agree that the "it" thing seems to have drawn more attention than Flint Curtis ... Poor lad I just hope HE'S okay! Maybe he's jealous of Carousel Quest and he's throwing a thrombie.

Yup I know loads of people refer to horses as "it" but I still dont like it!

Ditto. It depersonalises and objectifies them. Is that English correct? I hope so, I am a teacher of English.

Seriously I understand a need to keep distance between pet and working animal.

i only call a horse 'it' if it has been particularly impossible!

back to original question, it's not the first time FC has run out to the right, so i wasn't at all surprised by that, he does have his moments!
Rumour was that he had sustained a slight injury when falling on the flat at the World Cup final, perhaps there was still a niggle there.
(wouldn't be the first time the selectors have taken an amazing combination with a very slight doubt, and hoped for the best...!)
when he ran out at the boat he hit the corner of it quite hard with his chest/shoulder so i wouldn't have been surprised if he was sore there, too sore to trot up. his score wasn't needed so why risk such an amazing horse?
sincerely hope we'll see him back on form next season.

Just read the H&H reports in this weeks mag.

Oli states that he would have loved to be able to pull Flint up and bring him safely home. However as he was in the team he needed to complete the course if at all possible.

I really hope for Olis sake that the need to complete hasn't broken the horse permenantly.

In that case, you'll hear what's going on with Team Townend horses, far quicker than any of us......

So many jokes, so much lorry park gossip, so little time......

PS I have no problem with 'it', I hate my horse's name, call him 'it' as regularly as anything else. I'm pretty sure he neither understands me or cares what I call him.....

Ditto, to call a horse ' it' is very disrespectful for an animal that enables someone to reach the top of their game and earn a living.

Horses to most people on here are not commodities and are afforded greater respect.

OP you will find this forum a great source of informations and advice and my advice to you straight off would be that as a new member not to antagonise people so quickly and not be so quick with the sarcasm.

Going back to the original thread re. Flint, he has always been a difficult horse to keep sound from what I have gained from people in the know
wink.gif
It is always going to be a bitof a rollercoaster with him tbh. I hope he does return back to full fitness, but don't think he will be the reliable team horse perhaps we would like.

riders who call their horse 'it' give me the impression that they are uncaring, that they don't respect the horse as a sentient animal.
i know a FBHS who keeps up a string of vile invective as he warms up horses, calling them everything under the sun unless they are going perfectly. hardly conducive to riding kindly and tolerantly imho...
