( obviously I am going to get the vet out to investigate further)
I led my boy out of the filed shelter this morning and it was immediately obvious he was lame on his near hind. as he walks the leg is kind of coming under him and his left hip is slightly lower than his right. to get him into the barn he had to go down a hill and he really struggled, also really struggles to turn. he has no cuts or bruises, no heat, completely clean all over so doesn't appear to have fallen over, except for mud on his nose?! not really sure what he has done, whether he has pulled a muscle high up in his thigh or hip? he is weight baring on his leg, but not keen to move much.

has any one else experienced this? he is now on box rest so he doesn't has to move too much or do any slopes. checked on him 30 minutes ago, and still the same, but no worse and he is eating fine.

Is your vet coming out asap? If he's not willing to turn, that to me would say it was quite high up (ie pelvis...). Can he get to water/ hay/ food without moving much- I'd try and set up his stable so he could so that, at least until the vet comes.

Please don't leave it until Monday. Unless he has shown a marked improvement I'd get a vet out today. We had a horse like this and he had broken his leg, right high up in the stifle area.

I'm sure yours HASN'T, but it may be something quite serious that needs immediate attention - and pain relief as well. NB But if the vet is coming, don't give him Danilon or anything beforehand so no symptoms are masked.

Please tell us how you get on.

think he has pulled a muscle in his hip/pelvis, been on box rest since Saturday morning and this morning for the first time seemed much less lame, walked with just a slight limp and much better at turning, turned him out on tiny flat paddock for an hour with his friend, keeping a close eye. vet is coming out tomorrow to investigate fully with x-rays ect. as although he seems to be improving with a rest want to know the cause and prevent it happening again. also suspect some arthritis perhaps causing him to not use his back end well enough and then causing muscle problems. expecting big bill with lots of tests and then a while of ground work to get him right, not really sure! but hopeful he will in the long run stay sound once i know what caused it. will see what tomorrow brings :s

also suspect some arthritis perhaps causing him to not use his back end well enough and then causing muscle problems.

My gelding has just been diagnosed with bilateral hock arthritis. He had problems with his back end (more uncomfortable than in serious pain), McTimoney person came out to him and said his pelvis was out and worked her magic on him, however because of the then undiagnosed arthritis he continued to compensate for the arthritis and when he had a follow up treatment, his pelvis was out again. After the diagnosis he was on Danilon for a couple of weeks, and at his next McTimoney treatment, his pelvis was ok because the Danilon was allowing him to use his back end properly.

thanks
he did go slightly lame on the lame leg about 3 months ago, but only very slightly, and resolved itself after some ground work and straight line hacking, never been this bad before. at least there is lots of treatment if it is arthritis related which i suspect it is.
