I’ve just taken the dogs down to our favourite walking place. It’s quite flooded so they have a great time running through the water.
We stopped going in the summer because there were so many thistles, I assumed this made their paws sore.
Thistles gone, had a whale of a time, back home and hosed off as although the flooded bits are clear water on grass we had to come through mud to get to the car.
They are all madly chewing at their paws.
If it’s the same as summer it won’t last long but poor Bertie has never had this before and is going nuts!
Anything I can do other than washing them which I’ve done, what might it be?

Could be anything from upstream, I know when it floods round here, depending on the time of year, you could get sewage, agricultural run-off (slurry or artificial), pollution from any number of factories/industrial estates and during the last heavy rain someone on the other side of the river lost their entire oil tank and contents. My dog got really sick after going into flood water in 2015 and nothing would possess me to let them in the river any more, it's stinking.

I wouldn't use Vaseline if they are going to lick it straight off.

This isn't really the river flooding, its a very low lying water meadows but yes of course water would still drain down hill.
They have had a cheesy antihistimine and are all still a bit chewy but far calmer.
I don't own vasaline so that didn't get done anyway! Such a shame, It's really my favourite place to take them, and they seem to have a blast, but can't have the poor things like this just for the sake of an hour of fun.

Agree with this I wouldn't let them in flood water again, I would just bathe the paws a few times in warm water see if that helps I think whatever you put on they will lick off.

I don’t think it’s the flood, it happened when we went in summer and it was bone dry. I thought at the time it was due to nettles and thistles as they were pretty rife so we stopped going.
This was the first time I’d been back down thinking it would all have died back which it had, but still the same result. 🤷‍♀️
