I am 5ft 11 so tall for a girl, and I weigh 9 stone. I have long legs and a long body.

At the moment I have a 15.3 horse on share who I love and I feel right on him.

However, when I get a horse of my own, (which wont be for a couple of years) I was wondering what size horse would be best.

Well your light for your hight i would say, i'm 10st at 5ft8 and dont think i look big, i used to work at an equestrian centre riding anything upwards of 14hh to 17.2 but i generlly like riding something about 15.3 + just coz they feel better for me, but its not like you'd be to heavy for something smaller its just whether or not you'd feel sort of under horsed or unbalanced on something smaller that your ankles were like bellow their belly. think you'd probably look best on something about 16.2 and over though.

Yeah, I feel okay on like a 15hh horse, but when I look at pictures, I look out of proportion, so I would like a horse that I look the right size for.

Thanks for the help

I'm like that I'm 5ft 10 and same stat as you, Because of my long body I look at my pictures and look massive but is because I'm higher up than others because of my body size iykwim?
Im currently riding a 13.3, 14.3 and 16hh and feel like i look the same on all of them lol although admittedly i do look big on the 13.3 lol
I would say 15.3 + would be fine as you are alredy comfortable on a 15.3 and its that that matters more than how you look x

Yeah, I have a long body so thats how I feel lol!!
It's interesting to hear from people who are similar to me

Thanks for your help, I agree that it's more about how you feel then how you look.

There's an old saying 15h3" is a large pony & 16h is a small horse. Your weight isn't a problem at all, you could ride ponies but with your height at 5'11" I would think you'd need at least 16h2". But size of horse isn't always the important thing, sometimes it's their proportions. My daughter is around 5'8" with long legs & she has a 16h1" with high withers, so rides smaller, but she looks right because he's all legs himself

You'll need to try several to get the size & build you'll need but start at 16h2"

Good Luck with your search.

16.2!Blimmin' heck! I would say (within reason)don't worry about the height of the horse. So many people are hung up on 'looking too big'- as long as you are well balanced and having fun and the pony/horse underneath you is comfortable who cares what other people are thinking. All I know is that every year far more people end up 'over horsing'themselves than 'under horsing'- and the consequences of that can be pretty unsavory.
I would say anything above 14.2.

I'm 5ft 4 and ride two 16.3 horses but also my friends 14hh pony. I feel a bit big on the pony but not much. I find it completely depends how much leg the horse takes up. The two 16.3's I ride are both lanky and don't take up much leg, hence I don't look too small, but the pony is as wide as a barrel so my legs go out more than down!
