i am looking to buy my daughter a horse, but im not really sure what height i should be looking for.I am only 5foot1 but her dad is 6foot1,at the moment she is 13 5foot6 and 8 stone, she is still growing quite quickly though. We want a horse that we wont have to sell on again due to it being too small. So any ideas on the height, thanks

The other thing to consider if this is her first horse that she needs a sensible type that she can enjoy and learn new things with, if you over-horse her either in size or ability she may struggle unless she has plenty of experienced support. Sometimes the first horse needs to be a stepping stone and as she develops her ability there may be a need to sell and get a more challenging horse.
Buying your first horse is a minefield get someone really experienced to help and advise you.

if it's wide enough it will take up the leg and you could get a 13 hh rhino lol

Personally, with a 13 year old I would be looking for a pony/horse that suits her NOW and not looking too far into the future. If it's her first pony she needs something safe first and foremost and she may well outgrow him/her in terms of ability before she outgrows him height wise. I can't stress how important it is not to overhorse a child, especially with their first horse.

I do understand where you are coming from with wanting one you won't have to sell and I'm not saying it's impossible to find such an animal but if I found something to suit her right now I wouldn't turn it down just because I thought it may be outgrown at some point in the future.

Also depends on what she'll be doing. A chunky 14.2 pony might be perfect for her but if she goes to pony club there might be a lot of taller finer creatures whizzing about and she might feel out of place - not saying all PCs are like that, but some are probably posher than others :)

On a similar note, what kind of a rider is she and what kind of a yard would you keep it on? We have our very hairy cob on a lovely friendly yard where most of the other horses are equally fluffy, filthy and chunky but I might feel a bit conspicuous if we were on a yard with lots of smart-looking warmbloods!

Look at me with all my hang-ups :D

Have fun looking! x

Think it's all been said. I'm 5ft 8ins (but not still growing I hope!) and ride a 14.2 Highland who has plenty of depth in his girth so I don't look too big on him. Have you thought about getting a horse on loan first to see how it goes?

wow 16.2hh? im quite small - 5foot 3 and i have a 14.1hh connie x who fits me perfect! 14.1/.2/.3hh can fit people for ever! unless you get extremly fat or like the tallest perosn in the world ;)

It's the build of the horse in conjunction with it's height that's the key. I'm 5'4" so not much taller than you! ;) My mare is 15.2hh and a bit and I suit her very well as she's a LW, but I also look fine on my friend's 14hh irish cob. :D

Depends what she want to do, what tpe of horse she likes, etc. Ditto a chunky could serve her well, but if she like a finer horse shed need to get a slightly bigger. What does she ride now?
