I am looking to buy a horsebox. I've had a 7.5 tonne one before but am only going to be taking my one 16.1hh on her own, so I would prefer a 3.5 tonne. The problem now is that having just got a mortgage I have very little money left (3k) max, but cannot stand the thought of not getting out competing this year, and have seriously itchy feet at the moment. I don't want a trailer, had one before and do too many miles so its not economical for me to have a 4x4. Any ideas what I could afford-not really sure about a Ford Transit as they never look very sturdy to me. Any suggestions welcome, or shall I just give up?

Transit would be ok if you only have one horse. They go forever too.
ive just downsized, Look on ebay and see if anyones selling local to you so you can have a look first.

I am in the same boat as you. I would love one of the new renault masters or vauxhall movano's but I can't afford it. I have a 4x4 and ifor trailer at the mo' but have had to buy a smaller car for every day because of the miles I do and it seems pointless having two cars. I used to drive a 3.5 tonn VWLT and that drove ok, but there don't seem to be many about. I just don't like the look of the old Transits (snob, i know), you could always buy an old van and get it converted, someone on ebay is selling renault full conversion kits, just a thought. I just keep looking on the web in the hope my dream box will appear.

Maybe I'll look at a transit-it seems the only thing I can afford. I just think a conversion would probably be way too expensive. I'll have a look on ebay though, thanks.

I agree re. the transits, although I have an LDV now which is actually a really good well thought out conversion. I couldnt afford one of the master type things, but after a few enquiries, they're not the best thing....the VWLT35 also had some unexplainable mechanical probs and are low on power according to my mechanic....

Why not look for a mid range 5 or 6 tonner? secondhand

3.5 are at a premium plcie beacuse of young drivers and cost the same to tax and MOT and insure.

I am selling my 3.5 tonne transit for under your budget.
It has a brand new aluminium floor too, which you hardly ever see (except in new builds/conversions which are well out of your price range). It is a diesel, very easy to drive and to handle the ramp etc. Only selling as I've just sold my pony so it's doing nothing at the moment!
Oh, I'm in Kent BTW so not too far from you!

I am on the hunt for a good box as well (trailer went 3 weeks ago and I used up all my lifts and favours already!). I'd consider a 5t but I'd really prefer a 3.5t for (i) ease of use (ii) resale value (iii) insurance/tax/MOT cheaper.

I'm considering a transit conversion - my boy would fit into the high-top versions easily and for the distances I travel they would be perfect. In fact I am off to see http://www.3countieshorseboxes.co.uk/default.asp?pagesID=6 this weekend to have a look at their high-tops.
