When i was a kid I used to read all the horsey books......Black Stallion, Silver Brumby, Black Beauty of course and the pullen-thompson (ithink) sisters, as i got older i moved on to cowboy books ( well they rode horses!) JT Edson and Louis L'Amour. Now I like Mercedes Lackey, who writes about talking white sprit horses.....

What books did you read as a child?
What books do you read now?

Just out of intrest!?

All the Pullien-Thompson sisters, Ruby Ferguson and any pony book going, I also loved the Silver Brumby Series!!! They don't write pony books like they used to!!!! :D

Silver Brumby series, Jills Pony books, Black Beauty, etc as a kid (still have the Brumby and Jill ones!!)

Nowadays I tend to read horsey autobiographies, Jilly Cooper and and some good cowboy/bushman books but can't remember who they are by. Also a load of instructional stuff that I probably should have read when I was younger!!

Jeremy James' books are a great read.

Leopard, the story of my horse is an interesting read about a fabulous horse.

War Horse, read it for the first time about 5years ago, it is a real tear jerker but has a happy ending.

Black Beauty, of course! Also read Spike Milligan's version, very un-p.c but also very funny.

I hated Horse Heaven, had to force myself to finish it.

One of my favourites as a kid was Horse Pie, I loved that donkey :)

Jill, jinny, Jackie (my fav) and silver brumby. Layer the eventing series, last two were A hoof in the door, and A ticket to ride. I still have all my pony books.

I read books by the Pullein-Thompson sisters and Ruby Ferguson.

My mother was forever going to jumble sales (remember those??) and bringing me back horsey books.

Happy days.

I don't tend to read much nowadays. I read Warhorse and two James Herriot books when I was in hospital last week. I spend far too much time voicing my opinions on the internet to read nowadays. :D

Ok fair comment Paris1, but am sure some of the pictures show definite white bits on Black Boy!! I could be wrong, will have a look as I think I have them lying around somewhere in the attic (my guilty secret)!!!!

When i was a younger kid i loved the Sheltie the Shetland Pony books.

I then enjoyed Horses of the half moon ranch, Animal Ark or Heartland books.

Now I've read Pippa Funnell, Mary King and William Fox Pitts auto biographies. Also Read "William and Mary" which was about King William one of Mary Kings old eventers.

I really loved the series similar to the saddle club. 3 girls and their ponies (one a dun) on a yard doing all sorts of "Famous 5" style adventures and rescues. Can't for the life of me remember what they were called. I've got the covers in my head as red with silver writing. Any idea's????

Now a days I love the Dick Francis novels.

The author who wrote Hollywell also wrote Riders about a girl (Alex) with a slightly daft dun pony?

I loved Jinny - I still have those books now. Also read Saddle Club/Jill/Pullein-Thompson books

The Pullein-Thompson sisters were responsible for a generation of horsey obsessed girls, including myself! Wish I'd kept their books but I think they ended up going back to a jumble sale... where I prob got them from in the first place :)

I read the Pullein Thompson books when I was a kid, and my children read them too ... I remember going to the rather small local library to get them out, when I was about 6, and the excitement of getting my hands on one that I hadn't already read.

The problem, though, is that other than non-fiction (and some of which contains a lot of fiction IMHO :p ... ) and Jilly Cooper, there is not much around in the way of adult fiction of an even tangentially equine nature. Gap in the market, maybe?

The Jinny & Shantih series was always my favourite - still have all of them :D. And Christine Pullen-Thompson - did she write the 'Phantom Horse' series as well? And a series about a ranch, which I think might be the Heartland series others have mentioned.
And Saddle Club - saw that on TV the other day (it was on H&C straight after SJ) and was a little disappointed that it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered the books as being... Bet I would have loved it if I was still 12 though!

Just been on Google to check - the ranch series wasn't Heartland, it was Horses of Half Moon Ranch. Loved them, and pretty sure they're all still in the loft too... Along with my 100s (!) of plastic model ponies :o:o
