What Horsey chore do you most like/dislike?

Hate- trying to treat mud fever as horse thinks I am trying to amputate feet and tries to get her retaliation in first. Also mucking out in sub zero temperatures as fork has metal handle and I have fingerless gloves so fork sticks to fingers...likewise defrosting taps and attempting to do water in these conditions, especially when someone has not swept up after washing their horse's feet the night before, resulting in me landing on my arse in front of the frozen tap, trying not to spill steaming kettle onto lap

Love- almost everything else- any job where I can feel my fingers and not upset horse...

Hate:
Mucking out! gah
Grooming in winter when they come in absolutely covered! (I like it in summer)

Love:
Making feeds
Sweeping
Bathing/washing legs off etc.

Hate waiting for the farrier!!!!! Over an hour I waited today - then he text to say he had broken down!

Does that count as a horsey chore?

My least favourite thing is topping up the field water, as my boys are in their own sectioned off paddock without automatic water, and I have to trudge 100 meters through thick mud with 2 jerry cans full of water in my wheelbarrow every other day. When it's frosty I can drive up there as long as I do it early, and before any others have been turned out.

I also hate poopicking the field when the mud is like it is now. Its such hard work pushing the wheelbarrow.

Apart from that, there is nothing else I dislike doing.

HATE - cleaning tack.. oh the boredom! especially when my grandad produces 5 other saddles that are never used, but he thinks they 'need' a clean!

DISLIKE - rugging mardy mare.. she wouldn't walk out of a stable in winter without a rug keeping her toasty, but getting it on is a problem, she bites! and then flings things at me! .. ouchie :(

LOVE- waiting for somebody to walk past the stables after my mornings hard work and saying 'ooh i could sleep in there myself!' mission accomplished :)

Good thread!

HATE:
- Poo-picking, pushing the barrow even empty through the gates & up the hills is such hard work, hate it.
- Filling hay and haylage nets as well
- Doing the muck-heap when the other liveries can't be bothered to chuck their muck up to the top and so the first steps get higher and higher. Grrr.
- Grooming when they've been rolling in mud - not so much grooming as transferring mud from them to me!

Don't mind doing any of the other chores really.

For those of you who hate changing rugs....why do it? I keep mine in their turnouts most of the time, it dries the rugs off much better & they don't have to have damp & cold rugs put on the next morning!

Another hater of haynet filling especially now we have the big round bales! I look like ive actually had a full on fight with it when I exit the hay shed (which I feel like I have!). Hay in my hair, down my boots, stuck up my sleves just everywhere!
Also hate clipping - got last clips to do this weeked thank goodness its going to be over!
My favourite job of the day is last checks, turning off all the lights and going home. Also like riding obvioulsy, grooming and sweeping

Filling up Haynets!!! Hate, hate HATE it. There's always a bit of irritating string that gets caught in the haynet and in removing it all the hay gets pulled back out, or the haynet gets in a knot or I worry i've put too much hay in, or not enough... Then there are the bits of hay that stick to my jumper and make me itch, or get stuck in my hair and the bits that fall into my wellies and cover my socks arrggggghhh am feeling quite distressed just thinking about it!

Me too! I LOATHE haynets!

having to admit that my horses sweet itch hasnt miraculously cured itself every year and having to put his boett rug on from March to October :(

oh and also having to soak hay!!

I quite like mucking out as long as the horse isn't a complete pig and you end up having to remove ALL the bedding. I like seeing it all swept back with fresh water and hay hung up. Although I'm nowhere near as picky about it as some on here...

I LOATHE filling muckbags (we sell them at the side of the road). They sell best in summer/spring so its always roasting hot anyway, and you're stood on a steaming muckheap trying to tip it into a bag which just isn't quite big enough... And then you break your back dragging them to the gateway. And thats even before the smell! GRR! Hate it.

Haynets is another one for me - especially as I seem to shed all of the hay when I get into the car and my OH tells me off!

Started having a pair of yard socks over normal ones so when I take off my wellies I leave the hay in them rather than in the car or over my carpets at home!

I dont mind cleaning tack but hate that I end up with really grubby hands afterwards.

I love grooming my boy and giving him his feed.

I hate making haynets!!!!

I don't like poo-picking the school after riding. Agree with clipping being fun at first then can't stand it.

I like mucking out, grooming, tack cleaning, love making feeds! Don't mind poo picking the fields.

me too!

i thought i was the only one! i absolutely hate it- takes me ages and its even worse when you cant get the hay off the bale arrrrrgh!!

I'm with the haynet haters too. At the end of day, getting undressed to have a shower and half a bale of hay falls from your bra - nasty - one day I'm going to find mushrooms growing there:eek:

I like mucking out, grooming, mane pulling, poo-picking, love making feeds and enjoy the annual spring clean - disinfecting + painting stables (yes, I'm odd!). :)

I dislike sweeping and worming.

I hate haynets too - but I found a great solution DONT USE THEM! I always feed from the floor now and it is so simple. I am blessed with one small equine hoover though that clears up every scrap and one very clean girl who does not tread it all around her stable.

Also hate tack cleaning and poo picking.

Like mucking out - very theraputic!

I hate cleaning tack, it seems to take me hours to do and even if its not that dirty!

I love making a new bed, mucking out if it isnt awfully dirty and i love making feeds!

Another vote for Filling hayenets! Hate it, especially in the winter when your hands are frozen!

I like grooming and poo picking (don't know why haha)

Hate haynets like the very plague and consider myself very lucky not to have to use them at the moment.
Electric fencing: hate that too because I am sure it was designed by some sadist who tried to create something very useful but incredibly annoying to put up and take down.
Like sweeping, love bedding up and having a big fat straw bed and the stable ready for the night.

Filling water buckets!! He drinks 2 large buckets for the short time he's in his stable (don't worry there's nothing wrong with him..he's always drank alot and I panicked when I first got him so vet checked him out and he's just a horse that likes water!!), anyway I won't have an automatic water trough as all the others on the yard cause problems so I have to fill and carry the water from 15 yards away..not too bad but doing it everyday for 2 big buckets is annoying.

Love grooming and seeing the clean, unknotted result...for the 10 minutes it lasts!!

Cleaning tack. Boring and makes my hands itch and sore. Also looks dirty again within minutes of being near horse....
