I need your advice please, a few weeks ago I thought b had been bitten perhaps from a fly, he had a small hard lump on his shoulder, after a few days it became crusty underneath his skin, but remained the same size. Now I have looked as it appears to be spreading and it looks like a scab again underneath his fur, I have tried to pick some of it off and the skin underneath looks moist, the hair around it looks matted, it doesn't hurt him , he hasn't got wet.

What do you think it could be?

Without seeing it, it's hard to say.
Could be an infected fly bite? Or rainscald? Or a slight skin infection? Or a sarcoid? Or an abscess? Or ringworm?
Sorry not to be more helpful

Description sounds like rain scald, but it could be several things - with rain scald you often get a kind of circular scabby clump with hair attached to it. I would try something gentle on it to start with, get it clean and dry and then maybe wound cream or aloe gel and see how it progresses for the weekend

Shilasdair- I know your are not vets, all I am asking for is advice nothing more nothing less.I will more than likey get the vet up, but I don't think its ringworm, cos he has had it for a couple of weeks and no one at yard has mentioned "anything".
I will wash with a scrub and speak to the vet on Monday.

but thanks for replying I know posters have to be careful.

the Watcher thank you too.

Sorry...couldn't help myself.
If I were you, I'd gently pick off the scabby bits, perhaps carefully trim the hair away with scissors and then clean it with a dilute solution of hibiscrub (or salt water) to see how it goes.
If it is painful to touch, seems to be growing, or has the feeling of a ball of fluid, then it may need a vet to give antibiotics etc.
Hope he recovers

I'm not a vet either.

I'd clean it and see how it goes, but I wouldn't pick off the scabs. If you suspect rainscald then also rug. The reason I wouldn't pick scabs is that you don't know what it is, and depending on that you could do more harm than good.
This is from someone who encountered occult sarcoids recently, never seen them before, and they were just little scabby areas. Not saying this is a sarcoid, I'm just pointing out that none of us know everything.

Hmmm...how old is ponio Sal? Have had experience of sarcoids recently (my horse that is, not me personally) and your description does about sound like a sarcoid. Sounds like another job for SUPERVET!!!!!

sunnymum - he is 12, the lump has now gone flat and the shape is like a small snake made up of flat like scabs.I must say the word sarcoid frightens me to death, yes it sounds like a case for the vet.
