My cob was diagnosed with an 'allergy' when he started with respiratory problems a couple of years ago after a endoscopy revealed excessive amounts of mucus in his throat, inflammation to his lungs and a high level of inflammatory cells in his lung wash. He was given a flixotide inhaler, which didn't make much of a difference and at £100 an inhaler:eek: I have had to find alternative things to help him out.

I'm just curious to know what inhalers you all use and whether they work??!

i am guessing the £100 one is like a bottle . I had one still do i use it in the horsebox. I bought an Era mask, expensive but there is no loss in the flixotide and u can put other menthol stuff in the mask for him to breath.
Like obios oil etc

Nope the flixotide is just a normal inhaler! If I was asthmatic and could get a prescription for it I could walk into boots or any other pharmacy and pick it up for £30, but because the vets must overcharge excessively on everything they charge £100! I don't think so:mad:

Hi,
My horse has COPD and I use Ventipulmin regually but I have also been using my ventolin inhaler with my sons spacer - seems to do the trick (when I can keep him still enough to use it). I am asthmatic too so I know what it feels like for my horse when he struggles to breath. He coughs a lot too.

I need a prescription to get ventolin unless I go on holiday to Spain and raid their pharmacies as you don't require a prescription over there:mad: However, I would probably get stopped through customs with an armful of inhalers! I'm considering asking the vet for a prescription and then ordering some online as he did suggest ventipulmin would be a good idea for my older pony who has had copd all his life, but I prefer the theory behind inhalers working directly to the lungs.

I use my blue ventolin inhaler - I need it when I groom him as I get very wheezy so I give my horse a puff or 2 at the same time about twice a week when ride him. I always put garlic granules in his food every day as I believe that helps with breathing and a company called Feedmark sells a good product called CLARITY from www.feedmark.co.uk which probably helps too. He has been really bad this year and I am next to a massive rape seed field which the vet said is not good at all and to stable him in the evenings next year. Somedays he coughs so much especially at night (my bedroom window is next to his field) that I get up and shine a light in the field to see if he is ok, then when I hear him galloping around I know he is ok !! The grass is very bad in my field and the ground is dusty. I soak my hay morning and night feeds for about half an hour and have a tub with a tap at the bottom to drain away the mucky water. I wipe vaseline around his nostrils too. Pampered or what ! He gets more attention than my family !! He gets sweetitch too so could be related. I bought Jack as a 12 year old welsh c cob and the previous owners never told me about his conditions. He had been stabled constantly from Sept to Feb when I bought him so they knew about his condition but kept it quiet. They said 'sold as seen' when I asked them about it and unfortunately I did not have him vetted. Hope this helps. Jocelyn
