I'm sat in hospital waiting my turn for a total hip replacement on my left hip. Broke it 11 months ago as a result of a spectacular fall off my mare doing something very boring (decked on a 30 min hack round the block when the saddle slipped) - the fix didn't work. I haven't ridden in 11 months (recovery then pain) but from everything my surgeon and physio etc are telling me I expect to be back in the saddle by the new year. It's never crossed my mind to stop riding (although I may give road hacking a miss).

What injuries/accidents have you overcome?

Ouch! I hope you have a speedy recovery OP.
Personally I've been very fortunate to have sustained very few injuries - probably the most painful (and most hilarious) was when a branch hit me in the face and cut my nostril - it looked worse than it was (caused a nosebleed). Got back to the yard and no one was interested in me, more concerned about the horse (who was fine!)

Broke my back
Then I broke my right hip .
Then I broke my back (again )
Then I really broke my left leg that was a right mess
Towards the end of the repeated surgeries to my leg my right hip gave up under the strain of being my only wieght bearing leg through my repeated surgeries this was over around four years.
So before they could finish with my left leg I had a right hip replacement .
The hip replacement is wonderful I could not be more pleased with it.
Good luck with yours .

Wow! All caused by riding? Thats a respectable list and great you are so upbeat - I can't wait for the op really, 3 screws causing all sorts of issues and I can't sit without serious pain. Onwards and upwards (hopefully not downwards when back in saddle)!

My OH, who's had the worst intro to horses with me, was definitely v concerned about my mare when I fell (I was road hacking alone so could have been so much worse). She was fine of course.

I broke my pelvis about 5 years ago now and was back in the saddle 9 months later. My old horse and me had a disagreement about striding coming into an XC jump where the ground was boggy, she put the brakes on and I flew straight over her head. Sadly, she failed to come to a halt at the jump and fell on top of me. She walked away fine however I was not quite so lucky! I do suffer minor pains now, particularly when it's cold and I now don't really jump any more as was told that a repeat injury could mean I end up in a wheelchair and unable to carry children so it's not a risk worth taking for me. I also broke my jaw at the same time but that was obviously very minor in comparison! It has never crossed my mind to stop riding though, I'm only 23 now so I've got far too many years in the saddle to have thought about giving up back then! I've always been quite a confident rider though and even that awful fall didn't really knock it although I am very sensible about what I ride now and won't sit on anything which is known to buck or rear (The odd one is fine but I could never ride something which does it all the time, the risk is just too great).

Wishing you a very speedy recovery OP!

had my first *proper* injury this June when i came off my 3yo and broke my collarbone.

i did a really good job of it, breaking it right at the shoulder end and pulling all the ligaments off too.

i was back riding 3.5 weeks after it was plated and am now back on the 3yo............i thought i would really worry about it but tbh i have been ok. The 3yo went away to be ridden away whilst i recovered from the op and built up strength in the arm and has come back better than i could have wished-now he knows how to carry humans he is a total confidence giver despite his tender age.

hopefully that is it! any further 3yo will go to the same guy to be backed to minimise the chance of re-breaking the same point in the future.

it wasnt the pain that did my head in it was the boredom and frustration and total lack of being able to do anything fun. I dont want to be broken again so will not be getting on anything known to buck from now on.

Broke my shoulder after my horse ran through some electric wire with me on top.

That has been my only serious horse-related injury to date. * Touches wood *

What injuries/accidents have you overcome?
Fracture wrist
damaged 3 -4 -5 lumbar vertebrae which led to a life long back problems in the 70's
permanent sciatica - which nearly led to me being in a wheel chair for life
on and off back spasms and back out
slipped disk
broken collarbone
broken shoulder blade
ruptured tendon on my thumb
fractured ribs
broken humerus
ruptured tendon in foot which led to planters facialitis - which led to collapsed arches
damage to knee
pre patellas bursitis

and on top of that 2 bad falls that my physio said I should not have survived I should have been 6 ft under

I would NOT pass an MOT

I don't break ! literally I have been told so many times by the doctors it will be broken, come back from x-ray & not been broken !

Got flung into the wall head first, fine
Had a rotational, friend thought my arm was broken & about to call an ambulance because I couldn't breath, 20 mins later was back on the horse.
Horse reared up spun round twisted my arm round the reins & flung me into a barbed wire fence, arm not broken just badly bruised !
17.2 ID jumped 3 foot into the air onto my foot, swelling the size of a tennis ball on it, doc said broken, x-ray said not, was still on crutches for a while
horse knocked me over & used hand to break my fall, doc said broken wrist, x-ray said not
my 2 3 year olds trampled me just over a week ago, a kick to the head & 2 to the back & bad ribs, both of them ran over the top of me, just badly bruised & a little concussion, doctor amazed I actually walked into A&E.

Safe to say I have been very very lucky over the years ! :)

I am the same. I was kicked full on in my arm in the summer. Doctor convinced it was broken. X ray said no. Came off the back of my 18hh boy and landed flat on my back. Thought I had broken my collar bone x ray said no. I have been very lucky this year.
:)

I have been quite lucky with injuries *touches wood* in that 7 years ago I broke my wrist and cracked my ribs. Fallen off several times since onto my hips and my muscles cause me issue with it being sore to sit on a horse for the first while.

All riding !
Before my hip replacement .
I could not sit without severe discomfort, weight bare when I stood up I could not walk very far
I had to put my socks on in a strange lying on my side type ritual .
I am not saying the immediate aftermath of the Op does not hurt because it does but from the moment I came round the awful dull constant pain was gone it does hurt when they get you up that was the next morning for me I went home the next day walking with crutches I never looked back I think within ten days I walked three miles to a friends house (with crutches ) just over five weeks later I was riding again I had my OP under light GA with an epidural no pre meds so you wake up very with it.

I generally land on my back or bum and just end up winded, no idea how I haven't hurt it properly.
My worst/best fall was when I was hacking on the road and my horse bolted, I dropped my reins (don't even know how that happened) and came off on a corner. Landed on my head and woke up on a spinal board in the air ambulance. The doctor thought i'd broken my neck, shoulder, hip and knee and I walked away the next day with just cuts and bruises. Got back on the horse two days later and haven't fallen off her again since.

I fractured my tibia after my horse ran into a tree out hunting and two years later fractured the same bone again after my friends horse kicked me out hacking!

Hope you have a speedy recovery :)

Almost exact same symptoms. To sit. Up or do my laces I'd have to bend slowly in lots of pain till I heard a click muscle on screws or bone (I'm not sure which). I had same GA etc and whilst I've still got some epidural effect the leg feels more correct already. Thanks for sharing the positive experience - I can't wait to get up and about now.

OMG and you still ride wow ! As a new rider this thread does not fill me with confidence lol

HGA just read yours blimmin heck!

You've had some luck!! Hats off to you for being so matter of fact about it - do you still ride? I think there are people in life who dwell on the smallest of injuries/health issues and people who accept the hand that life deals them.

Horse riding is dangerous even when you don't compete etc but I've ridden since I was 4, owned my own for 17 years and until the last couple of years had no more than a bump or two. I will be making some changes to my riding when I start again - roads will be an absolute no no and if I can persuade the OH I might invest in an older, been there, done that mount and let someone else take my mare through her teens!

I was going to say hugs for everyone on here, but it might hurt your bruised up broken bones! Hope you are holding up ok OP, hospital can drive you nuts.

I've been extremely lucky up until about 6 months ago or more when I ran out of luck .I remember taking a young horse up to a very tall, narrow rusty gate to open it, being completely stupid I gave him a boot and he thought I wanted him to jump, so he took off , hit it chest on and flipped over the top, we both landed in a head, dusted off and carried on ! I didn't get the tiniest of scratches and horse was totally fine, as I was clearly running on high levels of luck my vet was coming out the next day for vaccinations so I even got a stress free check over on the horse.

I then managed to break 4 metatarsals in my foot when my other horse got his front legs tangled in a pole jumping, he came down and landed on my foot, he crushed it that hard my foot split open right down to the toe joint :o so I was in hospital a little while with that as it needed surgery and I now have a painful lumpy joint months later! also various tendon and ligaments damaged but the doctors were not concerned about that as it was going to be rested anyway. So I got back on, was not phased at all and went XC jumping all sorts, galloped up some steps far too quick, horse stumbled and I went splat in to the next one with my arms out, bend my wrists backwards and ended up with both wrists broken, my left one quite badly :( so they healed up , now have lumpy wrists and they twinge a bit. I went on a gentle hack, now much more nervous! Decided to go for a canter, didn't see a sudden sharp slope on mossy ground, horse slipped over and landed on my other foot, badly broken toe . Which is a lot worse than I thought it would be!

I also have broken my collar bone, torn a muscle somewhere that meant I had to lye down for 3 days... can't remember what it was though, had a very painful back that is a bit weak now but haven't bothered to get that checked out as I've accepted I'm just bodged up :p

I am much more cautious riding now, jumps look much bigger than before and I'm annoyed at myself for wimping out when I used to jump everything and love it. Still persisting though and hoping my confidence and the enjoyment returns in time. I went out and bought myself a hit-air jacket, the best body protector I could find and a brand new hat as I hit my head badly when breaking my wrists. So the idea is after spending a fortune I won't ever come off again ;)

Onwards and upwards!

Ive been lucky enough so far (touch wood) not to break anything. I am however off work after a nasty fall on sunday where new baby pony spooked, saddle slipped and i went splat on a gravel track! I currently have a left hip about 3x the size it should be (landed directly on it!) and a really lovely looking gravel rash all along my lower back! It will teach me not to get complacent with a new horse again! My big lad whos off with injury never spooked so i figured new

Ohhh the joys of horses!

I think I might give up, having read all this. I'm touching every piece of wood I can see right now.
In 30 years of riding I've ended up in hospital 3 times so consider myself pretty lucky.

1 - Horse and I both fell over. As he got up he stood on my arm and struck (I won't say kicked as it was unintentional) me in the face. Almost severed tendon from muscle in my arm (another few mm and I've had required surgery) and pretty much detached one of my nostrils from my face. 4 days after my last GCSE. I was evil as had a long summer of riding planned. I missed all my competitions but would wait for mum and dad to go to work, rush up to the farm and hack out one handed.
2 - Concussion after a relatively straightforward fall - friend's pony leaped about 6' over an 18" fence, I went even higher!
3 - Dislocated finger catching it in my boy's mane while jumping.

I may have broken a toe (the same one) a couple of times, but nothing they can do so didn't bother going to hospital. I only went for the finger as my OH (a rugby player so used to doing it on himself) couldn't get it back in! (not without me threatening to elbow him in the manbits anyway!)

In this time by far the worst injury I've had was fracturing my cheekbone and damaging facial nerves - slipping on a wet bathroom floor on holiday!

Broke my elbow aged 11. Parents thought that that would be the end of my horsie days - how wrong they where! 2 4 inch pins, 2 months in a full cast and several months of excruciating physio and I was back in the saddle. Parents where devastated!

Since then, torn ligaments in my shoulder, multiple impressive bruises, sprained ankle, hairline fracture in foot, various torn muscles, lumps, bumps and bruises.

Most recent was horse dumping me in a heap on the road, ripped skin off my fingers, the biggest bruises I've ever seen (thigh, ankle, wrists, elbows), stiff neck from muscle injury, concussion and sprained ankle. None actually that bad or serious and lucky to hobble away really considering I hit tarmac head first from a galloping 17hh horse.

Generally I just bruise. I am well padded and have a decent pain threshold so have walked away unscathed more times than I really should have at this stage.

All of these stories are awful - just goes to show how mad we are!!! But irony is whilst I'm and about and doing rather well following my hip op, my OH has managed to fracture his elbow riding a hover board! Given the grief I got from him for breaking my hip last year (dangers of riding etc etc etc - he's got better) I'm going to enjoy this more than I should!!

Well I have been dumped many a time while out hunting, once had my boot lodged in my stirrup thrown to one side and dragged.......resulted my jacket torn and a fetching hoof print pattern and a good view of the field (Please note this was in an angled position!).... ...years later of many dumping's....I have now a weak back and a consultant advising me to give up riding after a MRI scan.....Yeah right.......so I now go floppy when I fall.....less impact on the body......generally I have been lucky!!!!

Sprained both wrists when the TB mare I was loaning and I disagreed about galloping across a field. She bucked me off, I landed with both wrists braced. I'm probably lucky they didn't break.

I wouldn't say I've overcome that, I think it was the moment that my confidence went up in a puff of smoke, bit stupid, really, it was really minor.

Then there was the leg thing, which has been a big pain and I haven't overcome at all cos now I'm a massive wuss and even going across the field is a trauma.

I broke my shoulder and twisted it up out of place out hacking in the woods when I was about 11. A (very very small) tree fell and spooked my mare, the way she tried to bolt meant we had the tree blocking our path (apprently she decided it was best to race under the falling tree to escape, go figure) and it was either try to dismount or get taken through the tree. Tried to dismount, foot got caught in stirrup and I landed on my shoulder. Didn't realise it was broken and pushed myself up with that arm, which of course pushed it up out of place and then twisted it. Not long after I was out of a sling, and back on, I nearly got my leg crushed by my big boy as he slipped and came down on his side - luckily was able to get my leg out from under him before he landed!!!

Don't think I've had any falls/injuries as dramatic as those since *touch wood!!!* but neither really effected my confidence in any way. That said, I've had other very minor falls and been a nervous wreck after them.
