I haven't a clue who to go to. Who to avoid? Who offers the best value?
Some of the terminology is confusing too. What is 'sum insured'? and I want to add vets fees should I go £3000 or be safe at £5000?

So what is your opinion on the bets insurer and whether I should be cautionary when thinking of vets fees. On a side note: who do you use and why do you think they are good?

Coffee and biscuits for you if insurance doesn't confuse you ^^

Hi, I would avoid E&L like the plague, I have had many arguments with them trying to wiggle out of claims! I now use Petplan Equine, and never had any problems, and NFU are supposed to be good too.

The sum insured is the value of your horse. If your horse is valued over a certain amount, I think that some insurance companies will ask for copies of a 5 stage vetting. I usually have vets fees for £3000, but its personal preference, and I think it depends on what you do with your horse and the likelyhood of injury - my horse is just a happy hacker and lower risk than some, although you can't stop them playing in the field!

You can also have your tack insured too which may cost extra.

Hope this helps? :D

I used to be with NFU and they were very good, but I swapped because they became too expensive. I am now with KBIS and I'm very pleased with them, I have £5k of vets cover (£7.5K for colic) and I am very glad I have as my boy was recently diagnosed with COPD and with scoping, inhalers and steroid injections the claim has already gone over £3k  KBIS have been brilliant, pay my vet direct and usually within 48hrs of receiving the invoice :)

NFU for the horses, but recently used Drayton insurance brokers for my new lorry who got me a brilliant price.

i use "scottish equestrian insurance services" they have been good so far, they are part of the same company as petplan, i did use petplan but it became to expensive, petplan recommended SEIS

NFU, and about to be making a substantial claim for vets fees so soon get to test out the service!

I'd always go for £5k vets fees, it is scary how fast it mounts up and my "leisure pony" (we do a bit of competing locally for fun) needs splint bone fracture surgery. It could easily exceed £3k.

I don't have LOU or tack on the policy but have everything else. I did look at taking Public Liability off (and having BHS Gold instead) but it was only £2 a year cheaper so didn't bother.

My claim is likely to exceed the premiums paid over the 4 years by at least 1/3 - so whatever the cost it is worth it IMO.

I am with KBIS, I phoned my vet and asked them who they find pays out the best/with the least hassle for owner and vet :)

They suggested KBIS or SEIB

Another vote for KBIS. I had 2 claims on the go at the same time, one for £2500 and one that exceeded the £5k fees, they paid out both direct to the vets and hospital very quickly.
From what I can see the vaue you insure for is only really relevant if you take out LOU as well.
