Can someone please tell me what a judge is looking for in a Working Cob?

There is some local showing shows that are holding ‘Working Cob’ classes, the jumping is only 2ft3, and I was thinking about entering Bodey.

He is 15’1hh and this is him (he is hogged and feather off). What do you think worth a try?

Oh that’s good because in my opinion (of course I’m allowed to be biased) he is the best hunting cob ever! So if it’s working hunter, then he is defiantly a working cob! Thanks!

The class is like a working hunter but for cobs. So it will be judged first and foremost on the jumping, then on conformation, turnout and style. The judges will be looking for all the usual cob characteristics but also for a cob that will be suitable for a good days hunting, keen and enthusiastic whilst controllable, comfortable and an easy ride. Blemishes are normally less of a problem for workers than for normal showing.

You can enter as either a traditional, welsh or show type cob in most classes.

Thank you, I think that covers Bodey, he loves his jumping and hunting. So what would be the correct turnout for myself? I would ride him in his snaffle.

Im guessing turnout would be the same as working hunter classes so,hacking jacket, long boots etc.
I think Bodey would be fab in these classes from what I have read on here about him.
Good luck and hope to see some great piccies with red rosettes xx

Thank you, that’s really helpful. I was planning to try the Trailblazers Showing at Ingleden Park in Tenterden. I’m only going for a bit of fun. Where do you go?

Thank you, don’t know about rosettes (he does have a splint) but can try. I did some local showing last year, just cob and coloured and we did quite well, so we will see. He still prefers bombing around the countryside really, or is that me???!!!

Yes, just think working hunter but for cobs so Bodey is perfect. Tweed jacket, shirt and tie for you and fawn, beige, breeches - not white!

Trailblazers workers really fun - I qualified George at Osbaldeston for the second round, he jumped lovely but was a monkey in the showing but at least we were third and qualified!

Good luck

and match report wanted!

Well done on qualifying, and the place! I have a feeling Bodey might jump 2ft3 like it’s bigger, he seems to enjoy doing that if the jumps are too small at the moment! Thank you, of course I will do a report!

jumping bigger is better than dragging feet and ploughing through them as some shows only let you into the showing ring if you clear the jumping round!!!!
so bodey should have no problems!

Tweed hacking jacket, shirt tie beige/canary jods. Hat, brown gloves, not sure about crop whether it is still supposed to be a cane (pretty sure it should be for the showing!) for both rings............ hmmmm

Also, snaffle ring is fine in workers, but have to keep the same bit in for jumping and showing.
Can often have boots on for the jumping but they must be removed for the showing section.

YOU MUST POST PICTURES AND A REPORT!

Thank you that is fab! Bodey almost jumped me out of the saddle the other day, he is feeling very well, hunting has really perked him up.

Dexter has really improved with regular hunting- here he is at Thame/Oxfordshire (affiliated) working cob

Oh he looks really smart, great photo! Bodey has really improved too, he is much fitter, and we are off again in the morning, yeah!

I'm hunting tomorrow too

love it

Judges tend to prefer a more SJ round than a true hunting pace. The gallop is very important as cob should really stretch out from the instruction to push on but then be mannerly to pull up afterwards (Dex struggles with that bit!) it is a WH just restricted to cobs. The only thing that annoys me is they just about never build to height and Dex falls over 2' jumps. TBH he is much happier jumping 3' but not even affiliated gets that big

Cool, have a great day, fingers crossed for the weather!

Right, so a nice steady pace then for the jumping. Bodey’s gallop is improving, but he doesn’t have a natural extension, however we are working on that. Brakes generally are very good. Bodey is the same, we went to a 65cm clear round and he jumped crap, he just doesn’t bother with the small ones, whack them up and he jumps so much better.

Why not do the novice as a warm up? You can get the feel of the fences

even in a different order

At Osbaldeston you went into a seperate ring to do your show straight after your jumping. It was part of the main ring cordoned off - but George wanted to carry on and tried to jump the flipping green mesh cordon!

But I don't know what other venues will be like.

We did the novice as a warm up and the working in was a nightmare - people whacking the practice fences up to well over 3ft.

There was some seriously lovely horses and fab riding in the open class.

If you promise not to laugh I'll post the vids of both rounds - but only if you promise not too laugh as I'm a proper muppet

At the venue I’m going to they only seem to do the one class, and I presume it’s the novice as the jumping is only 2ft3. The whacking the fences up thing does get on my nerves! I bet there will be some lovely horses there, so will have to see how it goes.

I promise I won’t laugh, please, please post them, thanks!!

working cob is amazing, it is just like working hunter so dress is the same but the class is just for cobs, me and my boy have qualified for the SWPA working cob at the david broom centre this year, height of fences is ususally 2'9 you can find novice ones at 2'6' they are brilliant.
