The definition of a forum is amongst other definitions " a place, programme or publication where opinions can be expressed and openly discussed" chambers dictionary

We are lucky to live in a society which benefits from free speech. We are all free to express an opinion.

My limited experiance of debates on this forum is that some members are quick to attack the person rather than the arguement. I am crusty and thick skinned enough to take this, however, some members may well find this intimitating.

Perhaps the fat controllers efforts should be directed towards ensuring the rules of healthy debate are followed.

Could you suggest an example for us to peruse, Anty?

I am sure you don't need me to point you in the direction of examples.

The point I am trying to make is why does the fat controller not intervene in a timely manner to allow debates to flourish and give the more timid members an oppertunity to express thier opinions unmolested.

Why would you call yourself 'crusty' :p:D

I agree and I think maybe newbies are shocked at how upfront and staight to the point some people are. It does take a while to get used to it if you don't have people in your RL who are of this nature. But I like diversity and I agree that sometimes the poster gets attacked instead of their posts (if that makes sense) But I still don't understand why some people choose to complain of others and what they post, instead of 'user ignoring' them. Would make it a lot easier for them surely :)

Also I think some people get personal, soon as someone labels a group of people or insinuates something about a poster it kicks off forum stylie :D

Ok, here goes?

Admin/ the fat controller ......are you out there......... can you let me have your opinion?..............

I'll keep you posted!!

If you look at the top of the first page there will be an appropriate place to ask Admin your question. Im sure they will get back to you with an answer. To be fair, they cant read/track all posts and probably dont get to know about any offending? ones until its brought to their attention by someone. Just guessing there tho.......

I think in a real life debates people will see the unspoken communication (body language etc) and then perhap temper their approach to that. In the world of cyberspace all we have is the typed words.

Personally I am with you, I like a good debate...but I think these dabates would be enhanced with a greate diversity of view points.

Yes that's so true. You can't get the 'tone' of what is being said (or written) I also think some people maybe get carried away with their debating and take it too far. I think you either understand that people have and are entitled to different opinions or you argue your point in hope of swaying their opinions to your way of thinking (something that will rarely happen)

I think agree to disagree is the best way. But I also think on the world of internet forums, that there are many people that are just about acceptable to have mixing with the public. In other words, it hosts all manner of personalitys and some may be of the odd variety  Not saying anyone on here is odd or anything :D

I think the thing to do is report the post, in the first instance.

I see the problem as being when the debate is robust the participants may not feel uneasy about the content.

However, I see a problem arising when a more timid member places a post and it is dealt with in an equally robust manner, that member will disappear into cyberspace and their opinions will be lost.

PS I would be concerned if people didn't think I was odd!!

When I say odd, I mean rocking back and fourth and hearing voices telling them to post nasty remarks :D That kind of odd. We should have a vetting questionare, sane posters only.:D

Yes, I tick all your definitions of odd...do you think I would pass the questionaire?

(I didn't post this the voices told me do)

 Now, was that a sarcastic tone, a truthful tone or a playful tone. I just don't know so I will have to report the whole thread i'm afraid :p:D

I like it here and remember the BHS forum from many many years ago. Had such fun on there, it was pretty much like this place until the staff got fed up of it and closed it down.
