Courtesy of google:
Jute rugs are great horse rugs for shining up horse coats & removing loose hair.

I suppose they are good for sort of self grooming like and all over jute mitt!:p

They're the old fashioned ones, I never see them used much anymore. Originally I thought they were thatched with straw weren't they after work when the horse was wet/sweaty and needed drying off in winter when it was too cold to wash off?

When I was a kid they were used as stable rugs. Thatched (packed) with straw if the horse was wet to dry them off. Now the only one in use is a dog bed. :)

They're a bit of a relic really! Not as effective weight to warmth as our nice modern rugs but we survived in the 70s and 80s with them!

Bless you, you must be very young.... They're stable rugs from the good old days. Days when you would steal a blanket off your bed at home, put it under the jute rug pulling it up to the ears. You'd then fold the corners up to make a point by the ears, put the jute rug on then fold the blanket back. You'd then do the surcingle up (like a girth) and if you didn't have a surcingle with built in padding you put a rolled up towel or thick sponge under it to protect the withers / spine. I feel really really old now.......

They were toastie, but they weighed a tonne! I wouldn't swap a nice quilty rug for a wool blanket, then a jute, and a surcingle! So much faffing around, they did the job but by the end of the winter when they'd absorbed a load of poo stains they were a bit nasty and difficult to deal with..

dont feel old, i remember doing that the exact same thing in the early 90's. I can just see the witney or bed blanket poking out as i think about it now.
Once they stained - which they did terribly- they looked awful as jute is/was a light brown/flaxen colour and then they were barely fit to be seen in . They always seemed to rub around the shoulders and slip back behind the withers.. and god alone knew what state you'd find them in in the morning, usually hanging down the horse's side with him standing on the blanket no matter how well you thought you'd done that surcingle up!

Im so glad they are mainly history now :D

Old Horse has one now! Not that it fits him or is warm enough, but thankfully it has been mild. His owner won't change his ways!

I personally like them, sometimes old things are still fab, even though out dated, a sign of my age!!

Yup I remember jute rugs and blankets. They were always hanging round the horses neck come morning. Thank God for cross surcingles :)

I can remember being really cutting edge on our yard in the early 80s ish and saving up spillers tokens for a quilted cross surcingle rug because my boy used to get really sore under his roller which tried to keep the wool blanket and jute rug in place, whatever padding we used shove under it all!

Not really sure why people post questions like this when there is a wonderful tool out there called Google ;-)

http://www.ponyandcarriage.co.uk/zilco-summer-rugs-carriage-driving-horse-wear-shop.htm

try this

Rug made of a hessian type material with a thin wool blanket sewn into the inside - really don't think you can readily get hold of these any more and not sure why you would want to with modern materials ...

Google lied to me! :) Said it was for making them shiny!

Yes I had a giggle at that answer!

The point of asking on a forum is that its a more fun, sociable way of getting an answer, and it gives those of us that remember them a good memory trip. Quite a few people have told people that they should have googled rather than asking questions over the last few days. I find it a bit strange. If you could only post things that google couldn't tell you it would be a much smaller forum!

Christmas Fairy - thanks, I'll have to try and take a look :)

I want one 'cos my lad is allergic to a certain material, I think its polyester, and jute rugs doesn't contain it. My vet recommended I get one :)

I have seen more modern version for sale with proper fastenings so you dont have to use the old roller methods. Will try to remember where, it probably wont be enough on its own though.

You will have to have a trip to the charity shops for some blankets :D :D
