i remember them! although i'm not sure if its just coz the woman i used to work for was too tight to buy more modern rugs :D

I horse at work has one with cross over belly straps and it's fab, admiteddly not the warmest but does the job when a lighter rug is needed

My YO uses one on one of her horses coz he's a pansy and modern rugs make him itch and yes he has got a blanket underneath. He's the first horse I see as I get to yard and makes me smile everyday.

Bless you, you must be very young.... They're stable rugs from the good old days. Days when you would steal a blanket off your bed at home, put it under the jute rug pulling it up to the ears. You'd then fold the corners up to make a point by the ears, put the jute rug on then fold the blanket back. You'd then do the surcingle up (like a girth) and if you didn't have a surcingle with built in padding you put a rolled up towel or thick sponge under it to protect the withers / spine. I feel really really old now.......

Phew I was hoping that someone else knew what the OP was talking about!
I remember the Jute rugs very well (and I am 37) - last used one on my TB when I was 17 years old! Scratchy things on the outside. :D
