Bear is a very social dog, unlike his brother, Zak the werewolf. However, it seems that he gets 'picked on' by other dogs. Yesterday, it was an over friendly GSD who got annoyed when Bear sat and looked at me, deeply disinterested in playing. It attacked him andi thumped it one with the ball launcher as the owner casually meandered over trying to recall with zero success. :rolleyes:

Today it was a chocolate lab that squared up to Brig (who stared back then wandered off). The lab then bounded over to Bear and started to show threatening body language and Bear again sat and watched me. I dunno if Bear felt threatened and is expecting me to rescue him? If I ask him to walk on, he'll bound on, but I'm not sure if that will encourage other dogs to chase and attack. I'm starting to get stressed about walking when normally it's a real pleasure with Bear and Brig. :( (Brig is entire, Bear is cut)

I know! The GSD owner was useless. I think the dog is a rescue, but when the owner eventually got hold of it, it went mental and he could hardly control it as it tried to get back to Bear :( We had seen it in the woods a few minutes prior to this and it mostly ignored us. I feel so sorry for poor Bear cub, who just wants to fetch his ball. :(
 
Aww bless him! I do agree, some owners need to be more responsible with their dogs, but in my experience, some dogs seem to give off an aura where other dogs will pick on them. I knew one dog at work that had been attacked three times by three different dogs and it didn't so anything to initiate it or aggravate the dogs. He was an excitable, immature type and perhaps the dominant dogs picked on him for that reason.

If in doubt I'd pop Bear on the lead in the presence of other dogs, hopefully the owners will get the point and keep their dogs under control and leave your dog alone!
 
Youd be amazed! Zak is always on lead because of his dog aggression yet other owners merrily let their dogs approach, even when I'm holding him down and shouting at him no. :rolleyes:
 
I dunno if this is a breed thing, if a dog is gobbing off at my youngster, he will be completely neutral (he got duffed up by two collies the other night) but if a dog ignores his invitation to play and remains neutral or shows avoidance behaviour, he will get a bit arsey. Bloody bullies, those sheps!!

Possibly :o. I'm forever having to step in (as in, launch both dog and tugger in opposite direction) when Loki goes from "play with me!" to "PLAY WITH ME GODDAMNIT WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!! CHASE ME! OR BE CHASED! I'M EASY THAT WAY!". There are several small terriers on our regular route that he's utterly terrified of however, and will happily burst through a thick hedge to stay out of their way (lots of the paths around here aren't wide enough for two people to go past side by side).

WRT Bear, I don't think he's doing anything wrong. Sounds like he's actually really well behaved since he just looks at you when he's being bothered. Most likely he's an "easy target" for boisterous dogs with hapless owners (the same dogs probably try forcing every dog they meet to play with them, and since Bear is too polite to tell them to shove off he gets 'picked on' to a certain extent). Have you tried getting between him and the other dog, and telling said dog to eff off? (I realise how stupidly obvious that sounds and I'm sorry in advance :p).

I should add a disclaimer that all of the above is pure speculation. And therefore a bit useless. Unless you like anecdotal evidence and speculation. In which case... Yay! :D
 
Hello you! No, I love anecdotal evidence (and pictures more, come on, woman!)

Bear is obsessed with retrieving his ball: nothing else matters. If I have the ball launcher and we're in a field, that's it, dog walking backwards and sitting so as not to miss the ball being thrown.

He is a well behaved dog, of course! I got in between him and the GSD and he did stick up for himself when it attacked. I just don't want him injured or made to think that all dogs are scary, although we merrily encountered, sniffed, then ignored three chocolate labs in the woods. :)
 
Do you want to swap dogs? Bear sounds ace. :D The only thing Loki finds more interesting than other dogs (and foxes) in close proximity is a giant, blue, plastic egg. I'm quite sure he's chosen it specifically to make me look foolish.

Good for Bear telling the rude dog to shove off.
 
Some dogs that are not properly socialised do seem to be a target for other dogs, that is not the case Im sure with yours so I can only assume you have a lot of dogs around you with very stupid owners.:D

Bear would get on great with my 3 and if he ignored them they wouldnt have a problem with that.

Lovely to see you again Pix youve been missed, no one else has got your quirky sense of humour and our pms were legendary.:D

No, thanks, Bear is the one I chose, remember and is currently being an iPad rest/canine hot water bottle. :D

And again, pics, preferably of Loki carrying the huge blue egg?! What the heck kind of toy is that? :D

I think he's quite social, he's just always been walked with Brig who only cares about running round and seeking out bunnies etc, never been bothered about other dogs, says hi then goes off and does his thing. Oddly, Bear is incredibly similar to Brig. They're both 'my' dogs, I wanted a l/w then I chose Bear and the OH chose the werewolf, I mean Zak. :D
 
He can't actually get his jaws around it. I think that's where the, er, "love" for it comes from. It just spins around in random directions and generally refuses to submit to inevitable death.

It was really useful when I had a chest infection a while back and didn't want to go stomping too far, but the fact remains I paid money for a giant blue plastic egg. No more wine+zooplus. :D

I hate it when a large dog wants 'to play' with my small grumpy old dog and he makes it plain 'I do not want this'. Owners too often are slow to step in. My old bloke is arthritic and does make it clear he's not interested. Not the playful dogs' fault, more the dim owners not reading the clear signals being given off, by me and dog, and failing to intervene quickly.
I wouldn't want someone bounding up to my arthritic legs and knocking me off them for a bit of fun, so don't blame him for feeling a bit sour about it.
 
I may be thinking of the wrong person but is it bear with the anal gland problems? Mine went thru a phase of being picked on when his were playing up, and the only time my other dog had been in a fight it was with a dog who'd been to the vet that day with infected glands. Made me wonder if it makes them smell a bit odd to other dogs. And if it's not you just ignore my ramblings ;)
