Following on from deep bedding post below, I was wondering...

What do you find is best to do a deep litter with. I have used aubiose before but did a full muck out once a week, but haven't deep littered with aubiose before. Perhaps that would work out expensive?

A guy not far from use sells flax to deep litter with. Anyone used flax before?

thanks

I love aubiose for deep littering, unfortunately I get shavings in my livery but I always start off a deep litter bed with a few bales of Aubiose. I would only need half a bale of Aubiose a week, max, for my horse.

Shavings works out OK but the Aubiose doesn't stick to the poo as much

i agree with this although I use a branded one. Unibed. It's very fine and absorbent. I made a bed with 2 bales for my colt in an approx 10x11 stable and that was almost 2 weeks ago. I haven't had to top it up yet. I just made biggish banks to start and take a little from the banks to sprinkle over everyday. I love it.

Ive always used Nedbed Pro for an extremely wet and dirty gelding this works great deep littered using about one bale a week in a 12x14 box he manages to trash everyting else.

I have used equisorb which is flax, except I did a full muck out every day (I just cannot deep litter). The poo doesnt stick to it at all, and it soaks up the wet quite well. I used about a bag a week in winter - you hardly take anything out - but I just hated sweeping it as it stick to the mats.

The idea is not to disturb it too much as the poo just sort of sits on top, and for the wet to create a layer on the bottom, then you just take the wet when it comes to the surface and top it up with more.

A friend of mine uses bliss which is another form of flax and she loves it - again she does a full muck out but it is supposed to be deep littered in the same was as equisorb.

A couple of times I added unbranded flax and I could tell the difference - it was a bit coarser than the equisorb, but it was a lot cheaper and easier to get hold of when there was a shortage.
