What is classed as advertising?

Sorry this is where I get confused but what is classed as advertising on HHO.

Right, I know all the usual stuff like links to your own business websites, or stating you have xxx for sale, or asking for xxx in your signatures is classed as advertising but you know when people (and I do it myself but didn't realise that perhaps I shouldn't be) but say for instance there is post asking what's the best fly spray etc and people respond saying I like XXX here is a link to it etc or say if I recomend a supplement and bob a link into the companies website that takes you straight to that product.

Is that classed as advertising?

Personally I would say advertising is only when you try to sell something for your own personal gain. Saying I like this brand and you can get it cheap here is not advertising IMO, though if someone constantly recommends the same website people may become sus that they own a stake in that company!

I would class starting a post or responding to a post saying I have this it's for sale if anyone wants it is advertising, if I did have something for sale I would just PM the person looking for it and let them know

There are many many forms of advertising.

The overt, as you describe - is the easiest to control and enforce. Stealth marketing is where users provide 'bias' advice and info on products that they have a connection to. Unfortunately it is very difficult to identify who is making a recommendation on a good product they have used & who is advertising. This is why you cannot effectively 'ban' it.

We just have to be a bit vigilant and aware about it all ourselves I think.
