I'm thinking of applying for a job in Durham and obviously I have to take into account my two girls.

So what is the surrounding area of Durham like? Are there good DIY yards? Good competitions? Good Hacking? What is grazing like in general - I have two stress heads that like their turn out so very important!

Thank you to anyone that takes the time to respond :)

Durham is a very big county and has varied terrain. Some moorland, some good agricultural land and some industrial. It has some very contrasting places - some very affluent areas and sorry very poor. Too big and too varied a place to answer your comments really.

Durham City is quite an affluent City perhaps someone local can comment on livery yards close to the city if that is where you are wanting to move to. The county has lots of former rail lines that have been converted to bridleways etc.

I am involved in Endurance and the local roup hold some very good rides which speaks to how good a place it is to ride in general - but it really does depend where you are plannng to be based. There are lots of horses in Durham!

I live in county Durham, and as per above post it is hugely varied, if you want to PM with a more specific location I'd be happy to give you all the info. but in general a pretty "horsey" area, lots of small yards and working farm type yards and also a very good selection of large competition yards with excellent facilities, plenty of competitions, a good few XCcourses available too, + the local riding clubs are pretty active, excellent outriding( or at least access to it) with beaches, hamsterley forest, etc etc

Like others have said Durham is a very large area, we are on the Durham/Northumberland border and have Muggleswick Moor at the end of our drive, it's not too far to the coast either, we like it and never have bored horses, the one downside is the underground springs going through the fields, making it very muddy in places in wet weather

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I'm going to Durham University is October...I won't be taking a horse with me, but hopefully I can continue riding if there's a good horsey scene and maybe there will be a yard I can help out at or someone who needs help with their horses :)
