ive decided to breed its a hobby for me ive had three foals born this year one which ive sold one currently for sale and the other(filly)retained i try and stick with sj lines and breed warmbloods
I'm breeding for pleasure from my SJ pink-papered WB (Lucky Boy) mare. I haven't put her to a top name stallion because I wanted to breed to complement her and most of them didn't seem to (sounds impossible but there you go) so I have one foal and another on the way from an eventer who is TB x Danish WB (May Sherif)
Foalie is a real mix but a stunner.
I think there should be more restrictions on breeding though - as a first time breeder last year, I expected to be asked questions about my mare and her conformation/temperament by the stud. Perhaps I am being harsh but I think professional studs should only take mares THEY would breed from, and not anyone with a stud fee?
If they did that they would be out of buisness, studs are not always in a posistion to turn down mares. I have bred for us, the yearling is ex of a mare whose pedigree could be traced right back both through the welsh dam & the QH sire. The stallion was a trak & is very well bred. This years foal is ex of a mare of unknow breeding by an ISH stallion who again can be traced back. As WB's are a mixture I dont thing X breeding is an issue, especially as some of the best performance horses have been TBx's. Both the mares had good temperments as did the sires & the sires complimented the mares. I had hoped to show the yearling, but after sustaining a kick on the hock, he has now been left with a blemish so he will just get the odd outing as experience. I dont think it hurts to take them to the odd show at least they get used to loading, travelling & the show environment.

Ill do you a deal and swap as i think mine is going to be to big for me !!! he he
I breed fully pink papered warmbloods with Dressage in mind for sale or keep depending
I do follow bloodlines and look closely at my mares for what stallions would best suit them. We are only small at the moment but would like to take my breeding program furthur but it is expensive and the returns on the foals does not always fill me with confidence of a decent return to make it worth while.
breed for my own fun and have one mare in foal this year. cross-bred sports horse/pony type and only breed if my mare is long-term sound and has no issues, has been graded and the stallion similar. I generally go for an older stallion that has competed himself and shown the ability to perform and remain sound over a number of competition seasons. I like particularly to have good temp. on both sides of the mating as a 'nice person' is much nicer to have around than a grumpy young git (and will hopefully be easier to train). I tend to keep if a filly and sell if a colt and only breed every 3 years or so.
Hmmm I am breeding Sports Horses, for the market of today and tomorrow (IMO - though some would prob disagree). Though it sounds a bit grand for me to say this, as I only have one mare!
Pedigrees - well I've wanted a mare by Sportsnight since I first laid eyes on him in 1996! He had a marvellous pedigree and B has a good one too. But it's also about performance - Sporty performed well (he had non lameness set backs though) and B is out of a Grade A mare, by a prolific sire! BUT, when her 'pedigree' is broken down in the purest of senses, she is 1/4 Dutch, 1/4 Danish, 1/4 Hanno & 1/4 TB. So far she's been bred to a very well bred TB (Hector's Dad), who performed well himself and is a proven sire of showing stock and is beginning to make his mark in the competition world as a sire. She's currently infoal to a WB, who has a wonderful pedigree, is well put together, has Huge movement and jumps for fun - he is, though, a fairly young horse, but with a decent future as a comp. prospect. The added bonus for me, is that this chap is homozygous for colour and I've ALWAYS wanted a coloured - ever since I fell in love with a lemon and white cob/pony at the riding school I rode at as a kid.
I think people are becoming more talkative about it and whilst education on breeding and help is always there when asked for in the right areas, there is still and awful lot of ignorance - but then that can be said for any area of equestrianism!!
As you rightly say, the Arab is probably the worlds only 'pure' breed of horse - though the Exmoor goes back a pretty darn long way too and there is of course the Przewalski's Wild Horse, but they have a different number of chromosomes to other horses, so may not count...........
But at the end of the day, every horse has a purpose - mainly costing us all a fortune
We breed first and foremost because we enjoy it and i think that generally when you are passionate about any activity that passion shines through. We have our dreams and our goals but love sharing those with other like minded people and make a lot of great friends along the way..
Mum always said "try to do your best for yourself and not for others, as if you spend your life trying to trying to please everyone else then you are deemed to fail... and that is what I try to do.
Following on from the "where did you all start" thread, like many of the members here I wanted to have a foal from my mare whom I loved so much, to love and cherish, to enjoy the pleasures of bonding and raising a foal from birth. However along the way I recognised quite quickly that with such limited funds I would need to finance my passion and thus make it financially viable venture. As with any business one needs to identify the market and channel your goals to suit that market. In reality it costs as much to breed a good sports horse foal as it does a poor one especially with the ever increasing AI, feed, vets farrier, hay, straw, entries, breed society memberships, foal registrations etc etc etc so therefore the end product has to cover those costs.
Fundementally our breeding program is based on Dutch Pedigrees, I find Dutch horses very easy to work with, compliant and affectionate, the old Gronnigen work horse, the Cleveland Bay and the Irish Draft have probably influenced their temperament and therefore find that it is a breed of horse well suited to the amatuer British riding club rider that is looking for a pleasure horse, but also has enough talent for an ambitous rider who can maximise on the horses potential. So technically conformation set aside as is critically important, we focus on character, rideability, and talent so that our foalies will be suited to the market at large.
Are you all breeding pedigrees?
erm well!! the dad is TBxCB does that count!!! mum is TBx with no papers at all!! has her hang ups!! like becki with hannah however this is due to humans not her nature.
Why are you breeding; for yourselves or for the market of today....or the market of tomorrow? Is this trend of breeding any old horse becoming greater than it previously was? Or are people just more talkative about it?
Being very selfish!! breeding for me!! couldnt bear to part with the last foal and had she not been PTS i would still have her!
Is this trend of breeding any old horse becoming greater than it previously was? Or are people just more talkative about it?
unsure of this one as never been into the breeding side before, last foal was a BOGOF!! so thought i would try for myself!!
Do you agree with breeding crossbreds? Or should the bloodlines of foals only be carefully managed and should there be some controls on who breeds what?
i dont have a problem breeding crossbreds as you need some fresh blood along the lines IMO. i do think there should be some control but only (and i will probably be shot down by the PC brigade!!) when you find gypsies that just throw anything together in the hope of making a fast buck. however if average miss or mr joe wants to breed their mare/stallion they should not be made to feel its wrong if it does not have all the correct pedigree and papers providing your not breeding the devil incarnate!!!
