Hello

I saw a horse on the internet and it was going for quite cheap. It said it had navicular. Does anyone know what navicular is and can you still ride a horse with it? Just a question but please help.xx

Navicular syndrome has many different forms. in its main instance a degeneration disease of the navicular bone or the distal sesimoid bone. Navicular syndrom is usually pain caused by the cartiledge on the bone degenerating and the soft tissue and connecting structure rubbing on it.

Treatment can vary as the levels of lameness caneand some horses with NS still enjoy a varied work life althought jumping is usually not encouraged.

Some treatments includ steriodal injections, nerve blocking, bar shoes, usually heart bar shoes fitted slightly back into the foot with the toe taken back further than usual. Pads and Heel wedges can also be used to give the foot better angle.

NS usuall affects horses which have 'flat' feet your TB types. However, in the early 1950 when horses started to come over from the continent and seemed to out farriers to have boxy feet, our way of trimming, as we tried to correct this 'boxy fault' caused alot of this european horses to suffer NS

Sorry but I wouldn't touch a horse with navicular syndrome. I totally understand that it is a spectrum disease and at the very low end it might be almost undetectable. However, you don't have to travel far along the spectrum to start hitting such devastating things as perpetual soundness problems, increased farrier and vet bills, insurance exclusions, heartache, worry and NO RIDING. As it is normally a degenerative disease, sadly the end result is often pts. My Highland x developed bilateral lameness in his front feet that was diagnosed as DJD + navicular syndrome. The specialist vet said one of the worst cases he'd seen. We tried steriod injections into the hoof capsule, Newmarket glucosamine, bute, rest. All to no avail and my best buddy Sullivan was pts at the ridiculous age of 20. That's where navicular can take you. I'd stay away. Any horse you buy may eventually develop it but why buy one that is already known to have it?

Not advised.... My first pony had navicular we tried everything but it ended with him being pts very sad as he was only 12 i think it,s sad that some1 is selling a horse with this disease, as if it got into the wrong hand it could go through hell....
