What is provided by livery yards?

Thinking of opening a full livery yard soon:

What equipment do I provide? Wheelbarrows? Mucking out tools? Grooming things? Haynets?

And with part livery do I always use their equipment or do I use my own when I’m doing it and they use theirs ? Or do we both use mine? Sorry if I sound stupid I am just used to keeping my horses at home and have minimal knowledge on the intricacies

And obviously I assume get there food for them

I'll give the example of the one I'm on.
YO provides barrows (massive 2 wheeled tipping ones) mucking out tools and has haynets if needed.
Some liveries have their own mucking out tools and the occasional barrow and bring their own haynets as they already have them.
Our yard doesn't provide grooming though will pick out feet.
The hay and haylege is provided and is off their own land. Shavings are bought in in bulk and provided. Yard will provide basic nuts mix,chop. Anything else and supplements is bought by horse owners and YO will mix and feed. YO turns out and brings in daily.

It really depends. We are on full livery, we provide our own haynets and buckets for feed but use all the tools the yard supplies if we use them (we do sometimes muck out ourselves). Another yard I was at - they provide haynets and buckets although that is unusual.

Hay and bedding included in the price and we buy our own hard feed. Again other yards I’ve been at the YO provided feed if it’s basic. Sometimes if you want shavings they are extra.

Grooming not included, picking out feet not included and rug changes…well depends what mood they are in!

But then other yards all of the above is included except riding…and some yards riding is included in full livery!

Part livery- we’ve provided our own mucking out tools and haynets etc but then others they don’t mind you using the yards ones.

It’s only DIY I’ve had to use my own tools.

Basically decide what you want to offer and price accordingly!

If you are thinking of opening a *full livery,* yard, you will certainly need your own tools as you will be doing the mucking out. I would expect owners to provide headcollars, grooming kit, feed buckets, from a hygiene pov and for you to take care that they aren't mixed up. Most FL yards provide hay/lage and bedding as standard and may offer a basic feed, which the owner can add to as appropriate.

I’ve been on, and worked on, a few full livery yards in different areas of the country. They have always provided hay/haylage (some have both as an option, some only hay), bedding (usually only straw, one yard only shavings) and a basic feed (eg. basic chaff and pony nuts). If you wanted anything different, you could buy it in and they would use it instead but no reduction in cost. Most have provided feed buckets and haynets, but not all. I’d expect staff to have access to hoof picks for doing feet, but not necessarily that owners would have access to them.

Tools wise, provided if full livery, sometimes provided on part (quite a lot of people already have their own I think) and never provided for DIY. For part livery, I’ve mostly seen staff using their own tools when they do the horses, and owners using theirs on their days.

I think a lot depends on the type of yard you’re looking to run, and what % of full/part/DIY you want. If you like things done a certain way and to a certain standard, you might be better with all or mostly full liveries as there’s a little more control. As someone else said upthread, think about what you want to provide then price it accordingly!
