Evenin' all,

I'm looking after my neighbours angel of a dog called Poppy. She's fine but she keeps doing this!

Never seen a dog stay in this position before (admittedly we've always had males) and it just seems very odd, she very fit and lovely an lean and having had non-working labs I know what a nightmare that can be to achieve! When she does it you can see the muscle in her quarters, right of her tail trembling. It's not bothering her or anything however.

I'm not worried but am definitely curious!

But how cute is she!

My 9 month old Golden Retriever lies like that frequently. He seems very comfortable. He also puts his front legs out in a similar way at the same time. I don't know how to put in a photo, but he looks just like Poppy

Lol, so we're settled she's just a bit weird then :p

She is such a peach. Wonderfully trained and just generally lovely. Her owners are away for the weekend but she's recently had pneumonia (all better not but been told to stay away from other dogs for a bit longer) so she couldn't go with but she's so chilled considering she alone and theres a storm outside!

I'm bessotted with her, I want a dog but it's just not fair for use to have one in current circumstances.

EDT: She's 8 btw so not a puppy! lol

My friend had a Border terrier who did this - she described it as the 'frog' position.

My in-law's have a six month old lab/pointer who also does it - he is very bendy!!

A breed you will see very commonly doing this as suggested by boobos is of the terrier variety, msot staffies, some says it's a sign of good hips, some say bad, Im of the "msut be good hips" opinion, it's jsut a comfortable position for some dogs to lie in:)
Some dogs will lie like this when tired from exercising and they are panting particurlarly hard, so it's also possibly a good way to cool down, spread the load and get more cool contact from the floor as opposed to curling up.

All my Labs have done this but all stopped holding that position once they reached about 3 years old. Funnily enough daughters Boyfriends dog did this the other day on our back and she said Lucy doesn't lie like that anymore so I have always assumed it's when they are young:)

I have always been led to believe that it's a sign of good conformation. I think it is just a comfy position for well put together dogs with good hips to lie.
She is totally gorgeous, can you just not steal her? :D

I would love to steal her but I think her owners love her too lol :p She is currently lying down next to me snoring! lol

I do have vague memories of our old 3/4 lab stretching out like that but he wouldn't stay like it. Logical though as he was a badly bred (but lovely) rescue dog with the classic lab ailments.

One of mine (Willie - the black and white mix that may include lab) does this all the time - he just seems to do it because it is comfortable.

She is cute :)

I have known of dogs with very good hips do it, and equally very bad. We had a JRT with terrible HD, no sockets at all, and she lay like that all the time. I think maybe younger dogs do it more because the ligaments are still soft.
By the way Mollichop, have you seen the post lower down asking about Paddington?

Ets. Oops you replied on that thread as I posted this.

My springer bitch does this ALL the time, she chews her chewys like it, plays with her toys, sleeps like it and belly up, I call it frogy legs and she wags her tail when I say it to her, she's so funny

Nothing wrong with the dog you are looking after !

Sometimes she does it in the grass if we've been for a long walk , I always say she's cooling her belly !

my previous dog used to lie like this, and also drag herself along the carpet to scratch her belly. i called it her commando crawl :)
