It is correct to wear spurs in the ring, and I have to say that luckily none of the horses I ride go any differently whether I am wearing spurs or not. They are all very much off the leg, so I never have to stick my heels in. I have no qualms about wearing them as I know that I am unlikely to accidentally jab them in the sides, but would happily use them if I had to.
If I had a very backward thinking horse, then I would probably wear them to school in or in any situation where the horse was not walking out. I would rather give a horse a quick reminder than keep nagging with my legs. Not much fun for either the horse or the rider.
Used by a good rider nothing, by a bad one they are awfull
If your lower leg is secure(doesnt have to be perfect position, just stable enough to not jab horse by mistake) then no problem at all and 9 times out of 10 they are very usefull.
I have missed the anti spur posts but IMO nothing wrong with them, but, like everything else they depend on the legs they are attached to and in the wrong hands (or should that be on the wrong feet
) they can cause pain.
I don't use spurs for hacking but always for schooling and competition.
Nothing wrong with using them as long as you have good lower leg control and tact.
I wear them on my mare, she respects my leg, i dont nag her, suits us both, and no, smaking just doesnt work on her either!
I don't have a problem with spurs, I think they can be very useful.
I think the problem comes when people don't know how to use them. I watched a video on youtube the other day of a girl kicking deep into her horse with upside down spurs on when he was spooking. Needless to say she didn't get anywhere very quickly, and made the horse worse. She thought this was funny, so uploaded it to youtube.
