It suddenly struck me today that I am on a livery yard of older riders. Being nosey I wondered if this is a trend or are we a bit unusual?
So we have 5 owners in their mid to late 40's, three mid to late 50's, two in their 60's, and two in their 70's.
Everyone still rides, one lady has two replacement hips, another a replacement shoulder. The rest of us a variety of arthritic and age related moans n groans etc....
The farm owner did go a bit pale when one of us said had he realised he would have five women approaching menopause at the same time lol...

So are we unusual? What is the age range on your yard?

We are riding school and livery. We have from 4yrs old to 70 something! From school kids, to uni back and forth, then working and non working, those that only hack, those that only school and those that compete seriously. Retirees who have done all manner of jobs and my one that ran a riding school and still looks after 3 all day everyday, she is my idol with a wealth of knowledge!

Theres a mix of ages at ours, youngest is nine i think, wouldnt like to guess how old the more mature ladies are but not old old. Lovely bunch of ladies though :)

We don't really have any kids on the yard (they never seem to last long as there aren't any others for them to hang around with), so I think the youngest is about 17. The oldest is about 65 I think, with all ages in between; the numbers of people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s seem to be quite even.

Only four stables - YO's daughters' two BSJA ponies take up two and Kal and another livery mare occupy the other two. However, there are a bunch of other horses and ponies who live out and whose owners live on-site . . . so the youngest person on property who has anything to do with the many equines is four . . . however taking into account just the four stables the youngest is 12 and the oldest is 57.

18-late 40ish (one is a grandma but a young one)

Two 18 year olds (one shares with her mum and as a consequence all her stable work is done for her), a 20 year old (her parents help her out a lot too, she's at uni but lives at home). I am 25, the others are late 30s-40s.

I'm quite proud of the fact I am the only one up there who doesn't have support from parents or other halves, either timewise or financially :p

I am also the only non-yorkshire!

Mid teens to late sixties, and all sorts of disciplines, from seasoned trappers, to retired eventers, to pony clubbbers, to utter novices! And the batty thirty something cat lady with the pink yearling :D

Couple in their early 50's have three horses one into dressage she has two and her partner has one.

A mother (50's) and daughter (21) combo. Mother never rides her mare as she has health problems. Her daughter rides about 1 or 2 times a week on 20yr old gelding.

Woman in late 40s with 19yr old cob and ancient Shetland. Rides a couple of times a week

Woman 50's with her 18yr old ex-eventer. Rides regularly.

Young woman 25yrs with young horse she has backed and is bringing on to compete BD. Was competing Medium when she lost her last horse to colic.

Mid 40yr mother who has a little Dartmoor that she is small enough to ride with her 6yr old son (son not that interested unfortunately)

Me early 40's with 18yr old gelding.

So 6yrs to late 50's

On a yard with 24, mainly full, liveries with a few assisted DIYs (which means the horses get turned out in the mornings and owners come to yard at various times to muck out etc).

Age wise, we have one mum/daughter share where the daughter is 12, two young members of staff who are both 18 who keep horses on the yard, but otherwise we start at late 20s and go up to 67.

The youngsters are just under forty, I'm forty five and the oldest, (but still lots more flexible than me!) is fifty plus.... Lovely yard, lovely horses, lovely people... Friends with benefits xxx

All ages from a couple of tots to OAP's. Most are between 19 and 35. Everyone has been involved with horses for years and we get on together regardless of age.
There are about 50 horses + YO's horses. Its a busy but calm yard with plenty of space and a nice atmosphere.

Not many kids. At a guess I'd have to say that most are in their 30's, a few of us in 40's and a couple over 50. Great yard. Facilities not the best compared to other yards in the area but we do have running hot water, electricity, a 20x40 arena and a lunge circle. Yard is quite scruffy but we do have all year turnout, ad lib hay or haylage, yo owner mucks out, turns out, brings in and feeds. Horse care is very good and only paying €200 a month per horse for all of this and NO bitching! Very very happy here.

Our yard only has four of us - two in their forties, one in early fifties, and me at 22. Sometimes I do wish I was at a yard with more young people, but having looked around locally, the people my age with horses tend to be ones who've had them at home all their lives, so they aren't really on livery yards! I am doomed to hang out with older women forever :D

Ours range from 12 - 70ish I think.

Some of the kids are lovely and have their heads screwed on but honestly I would prefer if it was just older people. But that's just me, I don't really get on with children.

Out of 12 on the yard most are owned by people in mid 40's. A 15yr old has 2 ponies & 2 17yr olds have a horse each. It's just the teenagers that ride regularly though xx
