What do you think the best type of bedding is?? iv got my mare on shaving but its proving very expensive now she,s on box rest she has rubber mats at the front of the stable some people say mat the whole lot and sprinkle shavings on top but that cant be very comfortable, straw she will eat if her hay has all gone i know there is lots of different things out their ?

Im one of those anoying people that gets bored and has to change every 5 mins...

I prefered deep shavings for box rest, or straw/flax for turned out ponies,..although the arab tried to eat the flax..so that quickly went back to shavings,...suited me to the ground!

Im on straw at the moment,..but im getting the itch for shavings!...o im so sad!

Ecobed. i've tried everything else over the years, including straw, shavings, aubiose, and i've been stuck on Ecobed for about 9 years now. clean, warm, no dust, doesn't break down to dust with use, store outside, unpalatable, doesn't dry the feet out (unlike shavings etc), easily shakes out of tail, doesn't get stuck in plaits (!!), smells nice, very absorbent, rots down quickly, makes great mulch or wormery food.

Yeah i do semi deep litter my shavings beds i only muck them out fri and sun the rest of the time i just skip the poo!!!

Bedmax every time - tried standard shavings, cardboard, aubiose, easibed, laysoft, straw and one of the chopped straw they apparently don't eat

Standard shavings - breaks down too quickly

Cardboard - fine if you've got time to get wee out very quickly, kicks about off floor (fine if matted), personally found wee ran through it and puddled on floor

Aubiose - hated it, I'm not good at deep litter beds (don't like them) and no better but dearer than Bedmax for full muckout

Easibed - as per cardboard really, not absorbent enough, need alot to keep a thick bed (then works out dearer than bedmax) kicks about very easily

Laysoft - similar to easibed but better - works well as a base with shavings/bedmax over - more absorbent that easibed

Straw - horse eats it and coughs, also gets thirsy due to the amount eaten and drinks gallons then pees for england!

Chopped straw (unpalatable) - horse allergic to the stuff that makes it unpalatable and comes out in hives

Back to Bedmax for me

Ive just swapped from normal shavings to bedmax and its lovley stuff!!
My horse seems to be a lot cleaner and easier to muck out on it too, and its only 7p dearer then my old shavings so bonus x.

I went from shaving to equisorb which is flax and i have never once looked back.

Its cheaper, warmer, easier and generally nicer all round.

I had to skip out a shavings bed tonight and it reminded me just how much i hated shavings- so much waste!

Megazorb every time! The best bedding I've ever used. It is so economical and so absorbent, works well on deeplitter or full muck out. Also like flax a lot but it isn't as good as megazorb!

I use hemcore on one of mine and love it.

It is one of the most expensive ones to buy but is very absorbant and stays clean longer so you use less and it works out cheaper in the long run.

My local shop had none last month due to supply problems and I had to use easibed, that was crap.

I needed 2 bales per one hemcore, it just didn't soak up the wet at all and was too light so the bed got big holes in it.

i love hemcore but it is tres expensive to lay the initial bed however you will only need i bale per week.

i do like shavings to be honest, HATE straw its a pin to muck out smell s and i dont like the look of it !!!!!

I pay £7.10 per bale but at the place I go to you get a 2.5% discount if you spend over £25 and a 5% discount if you spend over £50.

So I normally go once a month, get all me food as well and it works out cheaper.

I use cushion bed its like easibed but bigger bits. I have rubber matting to the front of the stable and the bed to the back. Only take the wet out once a week, but my horses are really clean

. Saying that one of them has gone back to his rider and she can't stand it, he is messy with her but the cleanest horse when he is with me. I use maybe 1 bale a week if that, she use's loads but she takes the wet out every day.
