"There's only one guarantee with 'osses. They'll mek you look daft."

Sit UP!

SHOULDERS! (when referring to how I lean terribly round corners - I grew up around motorbikes :D)

Ride him LIKE YOU MEAN IT!

And one which came into practice this evening in fact (first jumping class with my youngster ); Take it as slow as you like, there's no point in rushing and spoiling it.

Oh, and one other thing; SMILE! xx

If I'm ever debating which rug to put on, I always remember 'Horses are better at keeping themselves warm than keeping themselves cool' - always helps me decide!!!

Sit up, heels down and put your bloody leg on.

Look where you want to be and ride there.

Ride the horse he is today, not the horse you think he ought to be. I find that really helpful when schooling the youngster...

My old RI 'Don't let him/her do that'
Old farmer friend 'When you've got livestock, you've got deadstock'
Both sayings have stood us in good stead, in very different situations, over the years.

it's a bit longer than most of those on here, but i think it's really really valid:

"the secret to horsemanship is to be able to tell whether a horse is saying 'I shan't' or 'I can't' - the symptoms can be identical but the treatment should be vastly different."
