What is the best peice of advice you have ever been given re horses?

"Keep it simple" when I got my first horse & I was stressing about feeding.
" breathe" and "you get what you expect" when riding.
Kx

"The key to riding is keeping the horse between you and the ground" hmmm ..... easier said than done.

"Heels down, sit up and kick on!"

When starting out cross country and tackling my first fence with a drop on the landing..."What ever you do keep your chin up!" Always stood me in good stead and watching others, for the most part, those that come to grief over drops always seem to be looking down.

Not directly to horses, but
"being confident means that you have the confidence to ask if having a problem"

Although the one I really love is
"Effeciency is intelligent lazyness"

And the best one for laughs,
"True Bravery is chancing a fart when you have diarrhoea" :D

Off topic but a friend who was training as a pilot was given this advice "you don't have to take off but by god you have to land!"
Kind of appropriate to horses, no one makes you get on...

When I was training I was told 'A good landing is one you can walk away from, a great landing is one where the plane can be used again'

"If you look at the floor, that's where you'll end up"

"DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY WITH THAT!!!"

And last, not really advice, more like feedback:
"The one thing I like about you, child, is that you're not afraid to BOOT it!!!"

"NEVER stick your tongue out while doing rising trot - you will BITE it off!"

:D

If you jump, throw your heart over it, and pray to god the horse comes with it.

My instructor always tell me 2 things ...
'if you look at the floor, that's where you'll end up...'
And when approaching a scary jump...
'ride it like you stole it!!...' :D

Money can buy you the best horse and lorry, but in CANNOT buy you talent, confidence or experience.

There's no shame in a neck strap, alway the neck strap NEVER the mouth

Oh and when showing 'Tits and teeth'!!!!

Think it's a quote from a golfer but my trainer always used to tell me "the more you practice the luckier you'll get" :-)

This in my favourite quote in life and use it all the time- it is so true and it applies to everything in life.

We may look at someone with their lovely home and big new car and think they are 'lucky' but actually 90% of the time they have worked so so hard to get successful enough in what they do to allow them to have these things.

When buying a horse, at whatever price you pay for it forget you ever had that money, your horse is only worth what someone will pay for it.

A good horse is never a bad colour

I nearly walked away from paddy cos he was chestnut , as was my previous horse , and i really wanted a bay ...... now i know that would have been a BIG mistake ..:)

I asked a very famous trainer for advice when I was about 12 years old and longing to be a horse trainer. He said: "Drink heavily.", advice which I treasure and follow to this very day :-)

When riding my horse who could pack a mighty powerful buck if she didn't like something, my instructors words would often come wafting accross a showground if she saw us in a sticky situation.

"Sit Up! Sit up! SIT UP!"

Look and listen to your horse...be observant - that is what my horse has taught me.

Dont look down!
Sit back...you are going to fall off any minute riding like that...........too late! (on of my instructors famous sayings when teaching me!)
STOP MESSING WITH THAT HORSE SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE IS DOING BETTER THAN YOU!
Shut your mouth and just breathe!

My brother, when I have been perserving with a horse where it is never going to click..

"Please remember it costs you as MUCH to keep a bad horse as it does to keep a GOOD one".

I have needed being told from time to time. And by bad, I would substitute "wrong" as well.
