What is the best peice of advice you have ever been given re horses?

Just thought of another little gem from my Mum

" Increase his work before you increase his food"

at the time I had a rather spririted chap who threw mighty bucks at the most inconvenient moments. Love 'em :D

"Don't let him look at that - its none of his business" from an instructor just as pony looks at something to spook at.

make a friend of your horse.

to ride with gentleness using the lightest of aids.

when you stop competing and start to read oliviera, that is when you started to learn the important things.

before you rush indoors to a huge feast and roaring fire make sure your horse is looked after for the night.

my own piece of advice: horses are cleverer than most people give them credit for, if you have a problem look at your riding or management before blaming the horse.

I got this advice from my instructor's brother-in-law during my apprenticeship:
The one who shouts whilst dealing with horses is scared.

My instructor used to say, 'When you ride what you're feeling, you're great. When you think, you ride like s***t, Stop thinking.'

When buying a horse, never look at the eyes before the feet.

First: when i was a teenager - dont get a horse that you will grow out of.

I had my 15.1 conni x when i was 12, i was lucky enough to have 21 years with her she was 33 when we lost her he was as wide as she was high so never out grew her.

Second: if you jump every thing like its 5ft you will never get jumped off.

horses and freedom and symponses (or however you spell it)
there are only two emotions that belong in the saddle, patience and humour
when in doubt kick on
those who said money cant buy happiness never bought a horse
my fave- if horse riding was easy it would be called football :)

SITSITSITSITSIT! *bang*what did i tell you? now get back on that bloody horse!!!
and my boss says it is going to be engraved on her tombstone "its brightening up" got to think positive when you have horses. "it could be worse.."

PMA- positive mental attitude!
Legs!
Stay on! (cos I reli planned to fall off! That makes me cross!) and as my dad always says- don't let him stop! Again, because I wanted him to refuse!

Smile and trees
Trees is from a sj lessons at college, she used to make you imagine a tree (if there wasnt one there) the other side of the jump and focus on the top of the tree. It actually works

Don't look down at the ground or that's where you'll end up!

Always have a light hand, your horse will thank you for it

Be firm, but kind

Never punish a horse for being a horse

95% of the time it is your fault if you end up on the ground

See to your horse before your own needs, you owe it to him after a ride to give him water, food and brush him off before you disappear for a drink and lunch.

I've had a few things said to me over the years, these are the ones that I've tried to stick to as much as possible and are true, possibly the most important thing that someone said to me was by my Grandfather, he told me "Never use violence, tell him no but never hit your horse you wouldn't like it if every time you cause him annoyance that he walloped you!"
