Hi,

I'm new to this forum so hoping I can get some really good feedback! :)

My 11yo mare has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her neck and so I am looking for a feed supplement for her. I've been advised that cosequin and new market joint supplement are great but very pricey! Is there anything out there just as good but that won't break the bank quite so much?? I want the best for her but don't want to be wasting money (especially as I'm a student so don't have any money to waste!!) So is this stuff really worth the price and how long does it last etc.??

Any help would be great thanks!

Just out of interest does she show any neurological signs, ie ataxia, foot placement issues, or a problem being ridden?

Interested in this kind of post as my previous horse suffered from wobblers.

I think my physio friend recommends synequin but there are so many on the market, its a total minefield.

Yes she has got Abit of an issue with foot placement- when turning in tight turns she occassionally treds on herself at the front. She also has shivers but she's had this a while and only affects her when turning tightly or backing up. She isn't affected whilst out riding and still seems really flexible through her neck-It's just when doing carrot stretches when she struggles!

Osteoarthritis and ataxia aren't necessarily related. Ataxia is a lesion on the spinal cord, usually in the neck but occasionally in the inner ear.

Turmeric is effective for reducing arthritic inflammation - the active ingredient, cumeric, has been proven in vitro. It's also cheaper than many of the available supplements.

hi, I had a horse with ocd in both stiffle joints and used Cosequin, it was very expensive as you say, but you could try using Vetvits Equiflex, it's got exactly the same ingredients as Cosequin, but I think it's about £14 for just under 400g, you'd need to look at their website.

I also found 'No bute premium' was very good for pain reflief, it contains devils claw, which I think has now been banned from competiting (don't quote me on that thou!)

Hope these ideas help :)

Vabell, How long did your cosequin last? i.e. how often did you have to buy a new tub? I want the best for her and so many people have suggested it (my physio and my old boss used to use it aswell) I just dont want to start her on it then find it gets too costly!

Cosequin and NM Joint Supplement are veterinary accredited regulated products. So if it says 10g contains 10g of glucosamine then that is what you get.

The vast majority of products available at feed merchants have no such regulation so you may find that it ends up more expensive as the active ingredients are in much lower levels.

I use NM Joint Supplement. A 1.5Kg tub lasts 4 months and costs £80 which I don't think is expensive given it lasts 4 months.

Thanks Perissa, I have heard good things about NM joint supplement! It isn't too bad at all when you think it is only £20 a month then :) where is the best place to get it from?
