I think to a cartain degree as long as you get a puppy and it is taught from the beginning that the cats rules then you will be okay.

We have a malamute and on the first day he arrived one of the cats walked up to him and punched him in the face and basically said he was in charge.

The only thing you will have to be careful of is accidental killings i.e. with a mal he could so easily snuggle up to the cat and suffocate him by accident.

I agree with the idea that it is more the dog you will have to watch over in the beginning for signs of being tortured rather than the other way round lol.

Good point about the eyes aswell.

Get a dog with a nice thick coat so when the cats do bully it at least it will be protected.

I have two Vizslak, the older one (nearly 14) is great with cats even though I have not got one, my younger one (just 7 ) and rescued, is terrible! It really depends on the dog, and whether you are bringing in a pup or an adult dog. Don't forget that even if you get a dog that has been brought up around cats - your cats have not been brought up around THAT dog!!!

Good luck in your search. I hope you soon find the right dog for you and your cats.

I have to say, I've found that collies get on fantastically well with cats. They aren't very big, are very loyal and easily trainable. They do need a fair amount of exercise / the run of a large garden but they are fabulous little dogs.

My old collie absolutely adores our cats.

My cat used to shove my dog out of his basket and curl up in it herself. She had lots of room to stretch out and he used to have to try to squash into her tiny basket that she kindly left empty for him.

my alaskan malamute would happily eat my cat on any given occasion. Saying that, when they first met the cat put her in her place and since then the dog avoided her, however once the cat made the (near) fatal mistake of running away from her and now the dog thinks hes a toy. Because of this, dog lives downstairs, cat lives upstairs. Not very fair on the cat because he has to be carried into the garden every once in a while to do his business but on the plus side we've allowed him into our bedrooms to make up for it haha

My retriever is excellent with cats, which is interesting since he wasn't raised with them. Poor boy really should have been enjoying a reasonably quiet retirement, but last year he suddenly had to learn to coexist with 2 very small and very feral ginger kittens

Most of the time he just pretends they're not there
