i am looking for something to pull my horses. need a cheap 2nd hand jeep or 4x4, that is cheap on fuel, insurance and the parts are cheap. so what is the best priced motor, i do hate 3 doors, but as i am thinking of getting as only me really will be in it. but it has to pull a double trailer with 2 heavy mares that is infoal 16.2hhs. i have 7 horses all shapes and sizes but that is the heaviest i have so want something to be able to carry that with ease.

i am asking for the impossable probably, but will go for maybe 6 yr old or so not really any older as want a few years with it.
any help, prob will be more the end of the year before i can aford it. but looking now for modles and info. thanks

It depends what you want. I would definatly try and buy early summer/summertime rather than the winter build up when what you would have paid £4000 for in the summer is now not leaving owners drive with little change from £5000.

I don't understand why it happens like this, but for some reason they go up in value before winter, It's not as if we have a stupid amount of snow and even if we did, alot of people out on the roads don't REALLY need to be on them, "I was going into town to see my mates ana init" for example.

It's simular to the whole "no fuel/snowed in/strikes" scenario... shops run out of bread and milk before anything else, because they'll last longer than a tin of beans eh?

Please excuse my rant, As you can tell, I'm not a 'people' person ;):D

So what actual weight will it need to tow ?

I am guessing the weight of empty trailer plus 2 large horses is going to be about 2200 kgs ????

not sure of diffo weight but horses can be 700-800kg infoal and what ever a double trailer weighs. i couldnt aford anyting more than 4000. but would have to be right, and cheap enough to run.

You will have to do a bit of research on this. I bought my jeep 4x4 awhile ago and got one that would tow 2250kg, The trailer is relatively light but will only take a horse 16h2" or less (Wessex Clubman), so i could get about 1200kg of horse in the trailer and tow it safely. In looking around, some of the best deals and major towers are older automatic (!?) 4x4s, such as older Mitsubishis and older full-sized jeep Cherokees. Some of these can tow 4000kg, but it costs you in fuel. Work out the trailer weight, then horse weights (bearing in mind you will need a bigger trailer for taller horses). Then have a look at what is available. You will have to compromise somewhere, to get something cheap it will be older and have poor fuel economy.

can these really tow 4000kgs? My LWB Landrover has a max (gross) weight of 3500kg and I understood that to be the biggest legal weight of any 4x4? The full size older Jeep Cherokee we had until earlier this year was 2500 or poss less.

pretty much any 4x4 which is capable of towing two horses wont be particularly cheap on fuel unfortunately!

Going by what your looking for possibly a nissan terrano might be worth looking at? sounds cars and they tow well.

Theres pros and cons with every type really although I would be more flexible on the age of the vehicle. A well maintained older one can be better than a cheap newer one plus the tax will be cheaper!

I've got a Jeep Grand Cherokee paid £2k for it though it is a W reg and was already converted to LPG it's SO cheap to run costs only a tiny bit more than my 1.4 Vauxhall Tigra and it's got a 4L engine so has the power needed. Not sure how much the parts ate as we've it had it v long but can't imagine it being too bad. We had a v old Toyota Hilux Surf before the Jeep and it cost a fortune to run, lacked power and the parts were SO expensive as it was an import we had to keep going to a Hilux specialist for parts. Would defo go for a LPG conversion gas is half the price of petrol.
